This volume, originally published in 1992 by Basic Books, provides for the first time a comprehensive state-of-the-art description of therapeutic integration and its clinical practices by the leading proponents of the movement. After presenting the concepts, history, research, and belief structure of psychotherapy integration, the book considers two exemplars of theoretical integration, technical eclecticism, and common factors. The authors review integrative therapies for specific disorders, including anxiety, depression, and borderline personality disorder, along with integrative treatment modalities, such as combining individual and family therapy and integrating pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. The book concludes with a section on training and a look at future directions.

Leadership is an Art Review

Leadership is an Art

On page one of Leadership Is an Art Max Depree writes, "The book is about the art of leadership: liberating people to do what is required of them in the most effective and humane way possible". This is a theme that runs throughout this very wise and in every way excellent work. The following quotes provide some of the flavor of Depree's enlightened and inspiring thinking:
*The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the two, the leader must become a servant and a debtor.
*In addition to all of the ratios and goals and parameters and bottom lines, it is fundamental that leaders endorse a concept of persons. This begins with an understanding of the diversity of people's gifts and talents and skills.
*Understanding and accepting diversity enables us to see that each of us is needed. It also enables us to begin to think about being abandoned to the strengths of others, of admitting that we cannot know or do everything.
*Leaders don't inflict pain; they bear pain.
*First, as a Christian I believe that each person is made in the image of God. For those of us who have received the gift of leadership from the people we lead, this belief has enormous implications.
*Leaders owe people space, space in the sense of freedom. Freedom in the sense of enabling our gifts to be exercised.
*Participative management is not democratic. Having a say differs from having a vote.
*Interestingly, though in organizations like ours we need a lot of freedom, there is no room for license. Discipline is what it takes to do the job.
*One of the important things leaders need to learn is to recognize the signals of impending deterioration.
*Without forgiveness, there can be no real freedom to act...
Depree has given us an abiding philosophy of leadership. Actually operating in alignment with these principles demands a very high level of integrity - one that few leaders ever do attain. Those that do so unleash forces of transformation resulting in high performance high involvement organizations.
This book characterizes a commercial arena filled with vocational potential. I give it the highest recommendation.

Recollections of My Life Review

Recollections of My Life
Average Reviews:

This is an interesting but somewhat strange book. It provides a really amazing view of what it was like to do science in those days, in particular about the various political maneuvering that was required to navigate the old spanish academic system. It also provides interesting insight into the personality of one of the greatest pioneers of cell biology. Unfortunately, part of his personality involves telling us all how great he was, so sometimes I found the book a little tiresome to read. I was also kind of disappointed in that it took a long time before he got around to covering the time when he actually made his important contributions to science. Still, for anyone interested in cell or neurobiology, or in the history of science, I would recommend this book fairly strongly as something they will enjoy.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) made prolific and lastingcontributions to understanding "the life of the infinitely small." Widely thought ofas the founder of neuroscience, Cajal made remarkable explorations into theorganization and function of the nervous system. His work is still referred to morethan that of any other scientist in the field.W. Maxwell Cowan's foreword to thisedition conveys the excitement and energy of Cajal's life and endeavors, theliveliness and flamboyance of his engagements with the microscope. Cowan surveysCajal's salient discoveries, noting that almost every important conceptual issue inneurobiology was foreshadowed in Cajal's work: the initial description of theclimbing fibers of the cerebellum, the discovery of the growth cone, the concept ofthe "dynamic polarity" of the neurom an anticipation of the later discovery ofaxonal transport, and the prediction that new synapses may be formed throughout lifeto serve as a physical basis for learning and memory.W. Maxwell Cowen is VicePresident and Chief Scientific Officer at the Howard Hughes MedicalInstitute.

Ayurveda: The Indian Art of Natural Medicine and Life Extension Review

Ayurveda: The Indian Art of Natural Medicine and Life Extension
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a solidly good book on Ayurveda. The author describes in a very readable manner all the essential points of Ayurveda including the constitutional types, five tastes, tissues, channels, etc.
A lot of these subjects are not addressed by more mainstream authors, perhaps because they think their audience will be bored. However, I think they are essential to a strong understanding of Ayurveda, and I think any serious student will appreciate them.
Furthermore, the author's style does not cram in too many unnecessary details, so the explanation of each subject is easy to glide through without heavy wading.
All of this is a pretty amazing accomplishment for such a little book -- this is a slim one. For those who have studied very little Ayurveda, this is an excellent starting point.
Perhaps the only interesting addition would be more personal information and case histories -- but this is hardly a surprising lack, since Ms. Heyn is more an herbologist than a doctor.
I think this book will please anyone who wants to learn about Ayurveda, beginner or advanced.

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian "science of longevity," is a holistic healing system that restores internal balance, health, and a sense of well-being through consistent attention to natural lifestyle, good eating habits, and the healing power of herbs. The author explains how sunlight, heat, air, and water, together with animal, vegetable, and mineral substances are applied in therapy to stimulate the body's natural immunity and healing capacity. One of the oldest systems of medicine in the world, Ayurveda emphasizes health education and the vital relationship between humankind and medicinal plants.
