Ayurveda: The Ancient Indian Healing Art Review

Ayurveda: The Ancient Indian Healing Art
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not bad. Not that great, either.
What I liked about the book was the detail. A lot of books don't really address srotas (channels), dhatus (tissues), and the dosha's aspects, seats, and signs of imbalance in the same detail which this book has.
I also like the solid factual basis of the book. The truth is that a lot of Ayurveda books dwell on really abstract "absolute consciousness" philosophy and then lay out treatments the authors invented themselves. So for an honest and down-to-earth discussion of Ayurveda, this book also deserves recognition.
The down side is that this book is dry. Unless you're really, really interested, you may struggle. The doctor does not have a very imaginative style.

This is the kind of text that people will likely want to hold onto and include in their personal library. This book is a good one to pick up for anyone who is either in training to become or is a therapist looking to continue their education in the area. The area of psychology seems to be moving in the direction of integration and this text help to provide an understanding of what exactly this is and how to achieve this with almost any area.

This volume, originally published in 1992 by Basic Books, provides for the first time a comprehensive state-of-the-art description of therapeutic integration and its clinical practices by the leading proponents of the movement. After presenting the concepts, history, research, and belief structure of psychotherapy integration, the book considers two exemplars of theoretical integration, technical eclecticism, and common factors. The authors review integrative therapies for specific disorders, including anxiety, depression, and borderline personality disorder, along with integrative treatment modalities, such as combining individual and family therapy and integrating pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. The book concludes with a section on training and a look at future directions.

The Image Processing Handbook, Sixth Edition Review

The Image Processing Handbook, Sixth Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book reads like a user manual for an engineering image processing toolkit. In fact, that is exactly what it is -- the author sells a companion CD that is a set of image processing plug-ins to PhotoShop. However, you will not need to buy his toolkit to find this book valuable. Any image processing package that you use will be of greater use to you if you have this book at your side. The important thing to realize is that this is a handbook for technical USERS. It is not a programming manual for how to implement the techniques it discusses, but a very high-quality discussion of what the techniques are and when and why you would use them. Within that domain, the book has remarkable depth and clarity. It is quite up-to-date in its coverage, and draws extensively from real-world applications in medicine, microscopy, and satellite imaging. If you need to develop image processing procedures in your work as an engineer, you will want to have this book by your side.

Whether obtained by microscopes, space probes, or the human eye, the same basic tools can be applied to acquire, process, and analyze the data contained in images. Ideal for self study, The Image Processing Handbook, Sixth Edition, first published in 1992, raises the bar once again as the gold-standard reference on this subject. Using extensive new illustrations and diagrams, it offers a logically organized exploration of the important relationship between two-dimensional images and the three-dimensional structures they reveal.Provides Hundreds of Visual Examples in FULL COLOR!The author focuses on helping readers visualize and compare processing and measurement operations and how they are typically combined in fields ranging from microscopy and astronomy to real-world scientific, industrial, and forensic applications. Presenting methods in the order in which they would be applied in a typical workflow-from acquisition to interpretation-this book compares a wide range of algorithms used to:Improve the appearance, printing, and transmission of an imagePrepare images for measurement of the features and structures they revealIsolate objects and structures, and measure their size, shape, color, and positionCorrect defects and deal with limitations in imagesEnhance visual content and interpretation of detailsThis handbook avoids dense mathematics, instead using new practical examples that better convey essential principles of image processing. This approach is more useful to develop readers' grasp of how and why to apply processing techniques and ultimately process the mathematical foundations behind them.Much more than just an arbitrary collection of algorithms, this is the rare book that goes beyond mere image improvement, presenting a wide range of powerful example images that illustrate techniques involved in color processing and enhancement. Applying his 50-year experience as a scientist, educator, and industrial consultant, John Russ offers the benefit of his image processing expertise for fields ranging from astronomy and biomedical research to food science and forensics. His valuable insights and guidance continue to make this handbook a must-have reference.

I bought the Oxford Textbook of Medicine in order to get a comprehensive and useful source of information for my practice as clinician and for my research - these three volumes do not supply me with that. For those interested in good sources for clinical help and advice, and a good source for references in scientific work and writing I instead recommend the following books with online access from Elsevier:

The Oxford Textbook of Medicine provides all that any doctor needs to know to practice top-level internal medicine. It gives compreensive coverage of the epidemiology, aetiology, and mechanism of disease, as well as clear, unambiguous coverage of the diagnosis, practical management and prevention of the entire spectrum of medical disorders. There are major introductory sections on the scientific basis of disease; and in the system-based clinical sections genetic predisposition, pathophysiology, pathogenesis, molecular mechanisms, and cell biology are covered in depth for all significant medical syndromes. Clinical descriptions of diseases are clearly and memorably written, based on the experience and insight of the authors--many of whom are among the world's most distinguished medical scientists.Chapters are not only "evidence based" but also on clinical experience and a thorough survey of all the relevant literature. Throughout, the approach of OTM is humane and ethical and, at the same time, factual, reliable, honest(especially where knowledge is limited) and rigorously scientific. This is not just a textbook of "First World" medicine. It provides practical guidance for doctors working in a variety of medical setting the value of a logical clinical approach rather than immediate resort to expensive imaging and laboratory tests. Moore of the contributing authors than ever before are from outside Europe, including strong representation of North American medicine. The new editorial team has ensured that the OTM continues to reflect rapid changes in medical practice:there are new sections on intensive care, alcohol and drug abuse, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, world health, clinical trials and evidence-based medicine, adolescent medicine, sports medicine, and emergency medicine; more than half the contributors are new for this edition; and most of the text has been heavily revised. The striking new page and cover design reflect the significant changes made in this new edition. The Textbook is illustrated by over 2000 two-color diagrams and many color Plates. The index is the most detailed and user-friendly of any major medical textbook: in an emergency, the reader can access information quickly- whether on the ward, in office or at home. Like its predecessors, OTM4 will be the trusted and ultimate reference in libraries, hospitals, doctors' consulting rooms, solicitors' offices, press offices, and primary care practices worldwide.

The Modern Art of Dying: A History of Euthanasia in the United States
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book takes us back to the 18th century Methodists, to see how "the art of dying" gradually became "technique." From pastors to doctors, the control and management of dying has an extensive history, with debates over "euthanasia" and painless death going back well over 100 years, and pre-dating contemporary medical technology. The author also documents how "euthanasia" as now understood was linked to eugenics and sterilization, attempts to medicalize perceived public problems through policy shifts. This is a thoughtful contribution, excellently researched, which is also an original interpretation of current debates.

This book describes one of my fondest dreams come true. Ever since I was a little girl I knew there was something wrong with the way I was living; raised by my grandmother, singlehandedly, no friends, no parents, no trust, no joy, no fun. I would carefully draw plans for living in community with all the people I liked. Living quarters built in a circle or square, a common building, growing our own food, having animals to care for, etc.
This book makes me cry and laugh out loud with gratitude and joy at reading about what is so much needed in our world.
THANK YOU, PATCH ADAMS!

Shadows Bright as Glass: The Remarkable Story of One Man's Journey from Brain Trauma to Artistic Triumph Review

Shadows Bright as Glass: The Remarkable Story of One Man's Journey from Brain Trauma to Artistic Triumph
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Shadows Bright as Glass is both a riveting story of Jon Sarkin's reinvention of himself after a stroke during brain surgery and an interesting overview of neuroscience studies and advances. The author also provides valuable insights into the impact of such an injury on the family and how they must come to terms with their loved one's new identity. The book demonstrates how amazing and often resilient organ the brain is. It also raises valuable questions about where identity comes from and at the same time points out how little we really know about the brain. I had a hard time putting the book down.

On a sunny fall afternoon in 1988, Jon Sarkin was playing golf when, without a whisper of warning, his life changed forever. As he bent down to pick up his golf ball, something strange and massive happened inside his head; part of his brain seemed to unhinge, to split apart and float away. For an utterly inexplicable reason, a tiny blood vessel, thin as a thread, deep inside the folds of his gray matter had suddenly shifted ever so slightly, rubbing up against his acoustic nerve. Any noise now caused him excruciating pain. After months of seeking treatment to no avail, in desperation Sarkin resorted to radical deep-brain surgery, which seemed to go well until during recovery his brain began to bleed and he suffered a major stroke. When he awoke, he was a different man. Before the stroke, he was a calm, disciplined chiropractor, a happily married husband and father of a newborn son. Now he was transformed into a volatile and wildly exuberant obsessive, seized by a manic desire to create art, devoting virtually all his waking hours to furiously drawing, painting, and writing poems and letters to himself, strangely detached from his wife and child, and unable to return to his normal working life. His sense of self had been shattered, his intellect intact but his way of being drastically altered. His art became a relentless quest for the right words and pictures to unlock the secrets of how to live this strange new life. And what was even stranger was that he remembered his former self. In a beautifully crafted narrative, award-winning journalist and Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Ellis Nutt interweaves Sarkin's remarkable story with a fascinating tour of the history of and latest findings in neuroscience and evolution that illuminate how the brain produces, from its web of billions of neurons and chaos of liquid electrical pulses, the richness of human experience that makes us who we are. Nutt brings vividly to life pivotal moments of discovery in neuroscience, from the shocking "rebirth" of a young girl hanged in 1650 to the first autopsy of an autistic savant's brain, and the extraordinary true stories of people whose personalities and cognitive abilities were dramatically altered by brain trauma, often in shocking ways. Probing recent revelations about the workings of creativity in the brain and the role of art in the evolution of human intelligence, she reveals how Jon Sarkin's obsessive need to create mirrors the earliest function of art in the brain. Introducing major findings about how our sense of self transcends the bounds of our own bodies, she explores how it is that the brain generates an individual "self" and how, if damage to our brains can so alter who we are, we can nonetheless be said to have a soul. For Jon Sarkin, with his personality and sense of self permanently altered, making art became his bridge back to life, a means of reassembling from the shards of his former self a new man who could rejoin his family and fashion a viable life. He is now an acclaimed artist who exhibits at some of the country's most prestigious venues, as well as a devoted husband to his wife, Kim, and father to their three children. At once wrenching and inspiring, this is a story of the remarkable human capacity to overcome the most daunting obstacles and of the extraordinary workings of the human mind.

McDonald's Blood Flow in Arteries, 6th ed: Theoretical, Experimental and Clinical Principles Review

McDonald's Blood Flow in Arteries, 6th ed: Theoretical, Experimental and Clinical Principles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is an amazing reference. It is a hardcore scientific look at the flow of blood through arteries. It's about time this edition was released, because the last edition is more than ten years old. The book is separated into chapters that are really monographs on their respective subjects. The authors do an excellent job of giving a bird's eye view of each topic and then go into far more detail than most people will be able to understand (myself included). But don't let that scare you away from the book. Even if you don't understand all the physics and thermodynamics, you can still grasp the principles.
If you have read any of the authors' journal articles, you know that their view of arterial bloodflow is much deeper than the mainstream medical community. This book explains the prevailing thought and then shows the shortcomings of conventional wisdom and presents the research that leads to a deeper understanding. Please do not think that this makes the book controversial. It is simply that most education on vascular physiology is nowhere near this deep or comprehensive. This is not truly a textbook. It is the ultimate reference for arterial bloodflow. Every serious student of the heart or vascular physiology should have this book in their library, and every researcher should have it on their shelf.

This is the definitive reference work in the field of arterial hemodynamics. The sixth edition provides the theoretical basis required for the understanding of arterial blood flow, both in normal and disease conditions including pulmonary hypertension, atherosclerosis, and heart failure. The authors examine the relationship between pulsatile pressure and flow using mathematical models of fluid flow principles; clinical considerations are paramount throughout the text. The sixth edition retains the key features so popular in previous editions-- evidence-based scientific rigor, a focus on practical applications, and a cohesive writing style. This is essential reading for all angiologists, cardiologists, circulatory physiologists, and vascular surgeons.

Endless Frontier: Vannevar Bush, Engineer of the American Century Review

Endless Frontier: Vannevar Bush, Engineer of the American Century
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very well written and entertaining book about a scientific administrator who played a major effort in organizing the technical responses required to anticipate and successfully meet the challenges of WWII. His skillful analysis, technical comprehension and political astuteness not only provided outstanding leadership at the time but shaped the intractions of goverment, industry and the academic community in such a fashion as to remain intact to this time. One comes awawy with an enormous respect for Dr. Bush. He must have been one tough character and difficult to deal with but he got the jobs done. It is a pity that his battles with Admiral Ernest King have, to my knowledge, never been documented. The issues they disagreed about were not trivial and their interactions must have been awesome. I read this book shortly after completing Tycho's Island and the similarity between the two men and the administrative issues they dealt with is both striking and illuminating.
Good men are hard to find and good books about them deserve our attention.

It Shouldn't Be This Way: The Failure of Long-Term Care
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recommend this book highly, having read it shortly after my father had to go into a nursing home. It resonated completely with my overall experience and made me more assertive in pushing for changes at the home where my father resided. Like the authors, I have experience with medical practice, as I'm a professor teaching medical students, but encountered the same frustrations that Dr. Kane describes. The lists of questions to ask and things to be cautious about at the end of each chapter are great resources for anyone who is, or may become, responsible for the care of an aging relative . Dr. Kane's sad, but engaging, story of his mother's experiences during her declining health illustrates the many difficulties in changing a system of care for the elderly that has depended too much on the good will and dedication of underpaid and often inadequately trained staff at assisted living and nursing homes. The problems Dr. Kane describes happen far too often.

The failure of long-term care is the country's best-kept embarrassing secret. Almost every adult in the United States will either enter a nursing home or have to deal with a parent or other relative who does. Studies show that 40 percent of all adults who live to age sixty-five will enter a nursing home before they die, while even more will use another form of long-term care.
Part memoir, part practical guide, part prescription for change, It Shouldn't Be This Way is a unique look at the problems of long-term care. Robert L. Kane, a highly experienced physician and gerontologist, and his sister, Joan C. West, tell the painful story of what happened to their mother after she suffered a debilitating stroke and spent the last years of her life in rehabilitation, assisted-living facilities, and finally a nursing home. Along the way, her adult children encountered some professionals who were kind and considerate but also many frustrations--inadequate care and the need to hire private duty aides, as well as poor communication and lack of coordination throughout the system. The situation, they found, proved far more difficult than it needed to be.
As the authors recount their mother's story, they impart various lessons they learned from each phase of the experience. They alert those who are confronting such situations for the first time about what they will likely face and how to approach the problems. Closing with a broader look at why long-term care is the way it is, they propose steps to make necessary reforms, including the development of national organizations to work for change. Their message to families, care professionals, and policy-makers could not be more urgent.

The Communicators: Leadership in the Age of Crisis redefines the professional strategies and personal qualities that this current age of incessant crisis demands of leaders in corporate C-suites, boardrooms, courtrooms, and in the corridors of political power. Drawing on dozens of extensive interviews with prominent leaders who describe and reflect on their most significant experiences, Richard Levick and Charles Slack underscore the heightened challenges and instantaneous risks that confront global managers in an age of digital media and intensified regulatory pressure. The book is designed for executives who want to learn from the best practices of others who have so ably responded to the conflicting demands of multiple audiences and stakeholders. In an age defined by crisis and its four horsemen - speed, transparency, media by sequel, and exorcised regulation - the book serves as a survival guide for business leaders and public figures in the eye of the storm. As Steve Forbes points out in his foreword, leadership today is tied as never before to effective communications and to how we respond to crisis. You know how you talk when you are around another Type I diabetic? You tell silly stories about how you act when your blood sugar is low. You talk about how irritating it is to suddenly have your blood sugar high for no apparent reason. You talk about how it used to be when you were diagnosed. It is such a relief to be able to talk to someone who understands all that you go through every day. That is exactly how I felt when I read this book. I have had diabetes for 25 years. That is not nearly as long as Mary Tyler Moore, but our feelings about our disease are very similar. Of course, this is a great book for someone with diabetes, but I think it is also a great book for family and friends of diabetics. Mary describes in an entertaining way just what it feels like to live with our disease. We are living in a world where more and more people are getting Type II Diabetes. Those of us with Type I are living in their shadow. I hope that Mary's book brings the subject to light again and helps people remember that fighting against Type I Diabetes is still important.

With inspired, well-crafted prose, she drills down to the most heartfelt, yet universal truths about life—including the lives of those with diabetes. She unflinchingly chronicles her struggle with diabetes, as well as her successful rehabilitation from alcohol dependence, all while deriving gratification from her roles as an actress, mother, businesswoman, campaigner, and fund-raiser. Her revealing tales of both her successes and failures in coping with diabetes offer others with the disease guidance and inspiration through example. In the book, stories include her rebounding from a low-blood-sugar episode during a Mary Tyler Moore Show script reading after the director poured orange juice down her throat, to misadventures caused by diabetes-related vision impairment at a dimly lit party for John Travolta. She also taps into the vast diabetes research network to talk to diabetic children and adults and with leading experts who are discovering new ways to control diabetes and its complications, and pursuing new ways to cure this disease.

As a new business owner of a magnetic health products company I have been researching through many of the most popular books of magnetic healing. Peter's book is one of the most scientifically based and carefully written of them all. He writes from years of experience in magnetic health research and his protocols are the most exact and scientifically based which I have found. He also presents new and important information concerning the dangers of indiscriminate use south postive magnetic fields as well as the use of bipolar products. It is vital that the field of magnetic healing be represented by this kind of credible scientific research or it wil be found to do harm rather than good. The healing protocols of the correct use of biomagnets are essential information to anyone who is considering self healing. I have found this kind of precision and information lacking in all the other books which I have read. It is important that users of magnetic products be fully educated to the possible misuse of biomagnets and their potential to short circuit our nerve functioning or even to cause harm. Peter has made a unique contribution in this field.
