Ayurveda: The Ancient Indian Healing Art Review

Ayurveda: The Ancient Indian Healing Art
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not bad. Not that great, either.
What I liked about the book was the detail. A lot of books don't really address srotas (channels), dhatus (tissues), and the dosha's aspects, seats, and signs of imbalance in the same detail which this book has.
I also like the solid factual basis of the book. The truth is that a lot of Ayurveda books dwell on really abstract "absolute consciousness" philosophy and then lay out treatments the authors invented themselves. So for an honest and down-to-earth discussion of Ayurveda, this book also deserves recognition.
The down side is that this book is dry. Unless you're really, really interested, you may struggle. The doctor does not have a very imaginative style.

The Image Processing Handbook, Sixth Edition Review

The Image Processing Handbook, Sixth Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book reads like a user manual for an engineering image processing toolkit. In fact, that is exactly what it is -- the author sells a companion CD that is a set of image processing plug-ins to PhotoShop. However, you will not need to buy his toolkit to find this book valuable. Any image processing package that you use will be of greater use to you if you have this book at your side. The important thing to realize is that this is a handbook for technical USERS. It is not a programming manual for how to implement the techniques it discusses, but a very high-quality discussion of what the techniques are and when and why you would use them. Within that domain, the book has remarkable depth and clarity. It is quite up-to-date in its coverage, and draws extensively from real-world applications in medicine, microscopy, and satellite imaging. If you need to develop image processing procedures in your work as an engineer, you will want to have this book by your side.

Whether obtained by microscopes, space probes, or the human eye, the same basic tools can be applied to acquire, process, and analyze the data contained in images. Ideal for self study, The Image Processing Handbook, Sixth Edition, first published in 1992, raises the bar once again as the gold-standard reference on this subject. Using extensive new illustrations and diagrams, it offers a logically organized exploration of the important relationship between two-dimensional images and the three-dimensional structures they reveal.Provides Hundreds of Visual Examples in FULL COLOR!The author focuses on helping readers visualize and compare processing and measurement operations and how they are typically combined in fields ranging from microscopy and astronomy to real-world scientific, industrial, and forensic applications. Presenting methods in the order in which they would be applied in a typical workflow-from acquisition to interpretation-this book compares a wide range of algorithms used to:Improve the appearance, printing, and transmission of an imagePrepare images for measurement of the features and structures they revealIsolate objects and structures, and measure their size, shape, color, and positionCorrect defects and deal with limitations in imagesEnhance visual content and interpretation of detailsThis handbook avoids dense mathematics, instead using new practical examples that better convey essential principles of image processing. This approach is more useful to develop readers' grasp of how and why to apply processing techniques and ultimately process the mathematical foundations behind them.Much more than just an arbitrary collection of algorithms, this is the rare book that goes beyond mere image improvement, presenting a wide range of powerful example images that illustrate techniques involved in color processing and enhancement. Applying his 50-year experience as a scientist, educator, and industrial consultant, John Russ offers the benefit of his image processing expertise for fields ranging from astronomy and biomedical research to food science and forensics. His valuable insights and guidance continue to make this handbook a must-have reference.

I bought the Oxford Textbook of Medicine in order to get a comprehensive and useful source of information for my practice as clinician and for my research - these three volumes do not supply me with that. For those interested in good sources for clinical help and advice, and a good source for references in scientific work and writing I instead recommend the following books with online access from Elsevier:
Cecil Medicine (978-1416028055)
Conn's Current Therapy (978-1416066422)
Ferri's Color Atlas and Text of Clinical Medicine (978-1416049197)

The Oxford Textbook of Medicine provides all that any doctor needs to know to practice top-level internal medicine. It gives compreensive coverage of the epidemiology, aetiology, and mechanism of disease, as well as clear, unambiguous coverage of the diagnosis, practical management and prevention of the entire spectrum of medical disorders. There are major introductory sections on the scientific basis of disease; and in the system-based clinical sections genetic predisposition, pathophysiology, pathogenesis, molecular mechanisms, and cell biology are covered in depth for all significant medical syndromes. Clinical descriptions of diseases are clearly and memorably written, based on the experience and insight of the authors--many of whom are among the world's most distinguished medical scientists.Chapters are not only "evidence based" but also on clinical experience and a thorough survey of all the relevant literature. Throughout, the approach of OTM is humane and ethical and, at the same time, factual, reliable, honest(especially where knowledge is limited) and rigorously scientific. This is not just a textbook of "First World" medicine. It provides practical guidance for doctors working in a variety of medical setting the value of a logical clinical approach rather than immediate resort to expensive imaging and laboratory tests. Moore of the contributing authors than ever before are from outside Europe, including strong representation of North American medicine. The new editorial team has ensured that the OTM continues to reflect rapid changes in medical practice:there are new sections on intensive care, alcohol and drug abuse, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, world health, clinical trials and evidence-based medicine, adolescent medicine, sports medicine, and emergency medicine; more than half the contributors are new for this edition; and most of the text has been heavily revised. The striking new page and cover design reflect the significant changes made in this new edition. The Textbook is illustrated by over 2000 two-color diagrams and many color Plates. The index is the most detailed and user-friendly of any major medical textbook: in an emergency, the reader can access information quickly- whether on the ward, in office or at home. Like its predecessors, OTM4 will be the trusted and ultimate reference in libraries, hospitals, doctors' consulting rooms, solicitors' offices, press offices, and primary care practices worldwide.

The Modern Art of Dying: A History of Euthanasia in the United States Review

The Modern Art of Dying: A History of Euthanasia in the United States
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book takes us back to the 18th century Methodists, to see how "the art of dying" gradually became "technique." From pastors to doctors, the control and management of dying has an extensive history, with debates over "euthanasia" and painless death going back well over 100 years, and pre-dating contemporary medical technology. The author also documents how "euthanasia" as now understood was linked to eugenics and sterilization, attempts to medicalize perceived public problems through policy shifts. This is a thoughtful contribution, excellently researched, which is also an original interpretation of current debates.

McDonald's Blood Flow in Arteries, 6th ed: Theoretical, Experimental and Clinical Principles Review

McDonald's Blood Flow in Arteries, 6th ed: Theoretical, Experimental and Clinical Principles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is an amazing reference. It is a hardcore scientific look at the flow of blood through arteries. It's about time this edition was released, because the last edition is more than ten years old. The book is separated into chapters that are really monographs on their respective subjects. The authors do an excellent job of giving a bird's eye view of each topic and then go into far more detail than most people will be able to understand (myself included). But don't let that scare you away from the book. Even if you don't understand all the physics and thermodynamics, you can still grasp the principles.
If you have read any of the authors' journal articles, you know that their view of arterial bloodflow is much deeper than the mainstream medical community. This book explains the prevailing thought and then shows the shortcomings of conventional wisdom and presents the research that leads to a deeper understanding. Please do not think that this makes the book controversial. It is simply that most education on vascular physiology is nowhere near this deep or comprehensive. This is not truly a textbook. It is the ultimate reference for arterial bloodflow. Every serious student of the heart or vascular physiology should have this book in their library, and every researcher should have it on their shelf.

This is the definitive reference work in the field of arterial hemodynamics. The sixth edition provides the theoretical basis required for the understanding of arterial blood flow, both in normal and disease conditions including pulmonary hypertension, atherosclerosis, and heart failure. The authors examine the relationship between pulsatile pressure and flow using mathematical models of fluid flow principles; clinical considerations are paramount throughout the text. The sixth edition retains the key features so popular in previous editions-- evidence-based scientific rigor, a focus on practical applications, and a cohesive writing style. This is essential reading for all angiologists, cardiologists, circulatory physiologists, and vascular surgeons.

Many people seem to like McNiff's book on what he calls art based research Art-Based Research: Shaun McNiff. I have read that book and found it full of errors. The author of that book must have never done any art based research. I cannot find any of his so-called research in any scholarly or peer reviewed journal anywhere. What's up with that?
This book finally explains what art-based research actually is and clearly. If you are looking for one book on this subject, skip McNiff and buy this one. You will not be disappointed.

Growing Up Again: Life, Loves, and Oh Yeah, Diabetes
Average Reviews:

You know how you talk when you are around another Type I diabetic? You tell silly stories about how you act when your blood sugar is low. You talk about how irritating it is to suddenly have your blood sugar high for no apparent reason. You talk about how it used to be when you were diagnosed. It is such a relief to be able to talk to someone who understands all that you go through every day. That is exactly how I felt when I read this book. I have had diabetes for 25 years. That is not nearly as long as Mary Tyler Moore, but our feelings about our disease are very similar. Of course, this is a great book for someone with diabetes, but I think it is also a great book for family and friends of diabetics. Mary describes in an entertaining way just what it feels like to live with our disease. We are living in a world where more and more people are getting Type II Diabetes. Those of us with Type I are living in their shadow. I hope that Mary's book brings the subject to light again and helps people remember that fighting against Type I Diabetes is still important.

With generosity of spirit, ebullience, and sly humor, Mary Tyler Moore presents the intensely private, often funny, and sometimes startling story of her life with diabetes. Growing Up Again is a delightfully candid read for her legion of fans, the more than 20 million Americans with diabetes, and everyone struggling to cope with life's unexpected challenges.Mary Tyler Moore, actress and activist, relates the highs and lows of living with type 1 diabetes for the past forty years. With inspired, well-crafted prose, she drills down to the most heartfelt, yet universal truths about life—including the lives of those with diabetes. She unflinchingly chronicles her struggle with diabetes, as well as her successful rehabilitation from alcohol dependence, all while deriving gratification from her roles as an actress, mother, businesswoman, campaigner, and fund-raiser. Her revealing tales of both her successes and failures in coping with diabetes offer others with the disease guidance and inspiration through example. In the book, stories include her rebounding from a low-blood-sugar episode during a Mary Tyler Moore Show script reading after the director poured orange juice down her throat, to misadventures caused by diabetes-related vision impairment at a dimly lit party for John Travolta. She also taps into the vast diabetes research network to talk to diabetic children and adults and with leading experts who are discovering new ways to control diabetes and its complications, and pursuing new ways to cure this disease.

Peter Kulish's book is a groundbreaking work in the field of magnetic health. As a new business owner of a magnetic health products company I have been researching through many of the most popular books of magnetic healing. Peter's book is one of the most scientifically based and carefully written of them all. He writes from years of experience in magnetic health research and his protocols are the most exact and scientifically based which I have found. He also presents new and important information concerning the dangers of indiscriminate use south postive magnetic fields as well as the use of bipolar products. It is vital that the field of magnetic healing be represented by this kind of credible scientific research or it wil be found to do harm rather than good. The healing protocols of the correct use of biomagnets are essential information to anyone who is considering self healing. I have found this kind of precision and information lacking in all the other books which I have read. It is important that users of magnetic products be fully educated to the possible misuse of biomagnets and their potential to short circuit our nerve functioning or even to cause harm. Peter has made a unique contribution in this field.

Solid waste management is a rapidly revolving field and one cannot rely on older editions of text/hand books. Laws and regulations, not just federal and municipal, but worldwide as well are being legislated routinely. Landfill technology must be improved to control leachate and methane;implications of 'high tech' waste from electronics must be recognized as never before; incineration can be promising if proper containment of pollution, and reasonable costs can be implemented; separation technologies to distinguish different color of glass, grades of paper, types of metals and plastics need to be fully developed for use in recycling faciltities. New research in efficent composting are being recognized. And this handbook is the best source for a novice solid waste professional.

A practical guide for the identification and management of a range of hazardous wastes, Waste Management Practices: Municipal, Hazardous, and Industrial integrates technical information including chemistry, microbiology, and engineering, with current regulations. Emphasizing basic environmental science and related technical fields, the book is an introductory manual for waste management as mandated by Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and related statutes. The first section of the book provides an overview of the historical and regulatory development of waste management. The second section delineates the management of municipal solid waste and includes coverage of conventional (e.g. sanitary landfill, aerobic composting) and innovative (bioreactor landfill, high-solids anaerobic digestion) technologies. The third section addresses hazardous wastes and their management, including identification, transportation, and requirements for generators and for treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. Disposition via incineration, chemical treatment, and land disposal are covered. The final section explores special categories of waste that often cannot find a regulatory "home" under either RCRA Subtitle D (Solid Wastes) or Subtitle C (Hazardous Wastes).Example waste types include used oil, construction and demolition debris, and electronics waste. The garbage crisis, as it became known in the late 1980s, will not go away as long as humans continue to produce materials that nature does not possess the capability to decompose. Yet there are few, if any, references that collectively and comprehensively address the management of household, industrial, commercial, and hazardous wastes. Filling this need, Waste Management Practices focuses on the entire spectrum of wastes and their management.

This book is short and to the point about it's key topic: clock drawing. Of greatest benefit to me was the last section of the book that specified how to score a patient's clock drawing and analyze that in the context of other information gathered clinically.

Written by a multidisciplinary team of experts in neurobehavior, this concise, well-illustrated book provides normative data on clock drawing from ages 20 to 90 years. A practical guide to the quantitative assessment of clock drawing, it also takes a process-oriented approach to qualitative impairment. The authors discuss clock drawing as a neuropsychological test instrument and the rationale for selecting specific time settings, as well as the basis for using different clock conditions. The book contains numerous examples of clocks drawn by patients with cognitive impairment due to dementia, metabolic encephalopathy, traumatic brain injury, disconnection syndrome and focal brain lesions. Insight into changes in clock drawing ability that may represent the earliest markers of cognitive decline in dementia are also presented. This volume will be of interest to clinicians and researchers in neuropsychology, neurology, psychiatry, geriatric medicine, language therapy, and occupational therapy.
