Rolfing and Physical Reality Review

Rolfing and Physical Reality
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"If there is one thing a Rolfer must remember," says Ida Rolf, "is to keep in mind that Rolfing is based on the theory of gravity." This is essentially the underpinnings of the attitude the Rolfer should consider when approaching a potential client. This book which is an amalgam of the wit and witticisms of Ida Rolf more or less defines the attitude of the Rolfer, the mind-set in which one is to take as a form of preparation. Rolfing is not a therapy, nor is it out to cure any ailments, disease or otherwise - it is aimed at elevating ones health for maximum mobility. The body is desgined to move, however, there are obstrctions that we are not always entirely aware of. Although gravity is constantly at play with us every day, we do not take into account the effects of gravity on the body. In Ida's understanding, gravity means structure, which also means relationships. Not just relation of the muscles to eachother and to the bones, but the body to the earth, the body with gravity. What is that relationship? The feet has to move along with with earth, to feel the ground, rather than resist or flatten as if it were a land mover itself. Gravity can be worked 'with' rather than against, which is the whole intention of Rolfing. This book is an easy read, however, because it is thought provoking to the person who is interested in Rolfing, you may want to enjoy some of Ida's brilliance and knowledge in her work. 'Rolfing and Physical Reality' is a good companion to her major work 'Rolfing' which explains the anatomical aspects of the body that has been shifted and unset. While the latter works as a presentation for the appreciation and observations for the Rolfer, this book acts as the thread for the Rolfers mind. I reccomend one with the other and should be read in tandem.

A warm and wise self-portrait of the woman who originated the therapy that bears her name. Here, Ida Rolf tells about her life, about the wonder of the human body, about life in general, and about Rolfing in particular, explaining her technique of manipulating muscle tissue to allow the body to come into its correct alignment.
After Rolfing, your body has been encouraged to do what it wants to do--you move with ease, your lungs take in more air, and you are taller (and therefore, slimmer).

Ayurveda: The Ancient Indian Healing Art Review

Ayurveda: The Ancient Indian Healing Art
Average Reviews:

Not bad. Not that great, either.
What I liked about the book was the detail. A lot of books don't really address srotas (channels), dhatus (tissues), and the dosha's aspects, seats, and signs of imbalance in the same detail which this book has.
I also like the solid factual basis of the book. The truth is that a lot of Ayurveda books dwell on really abstract "absolute consciousness" philosophy and then lay out treatments the authors invented themselves. So for an honest and down-to-earth discussion of Ayurveda, this book also deserves recognition.
The down side is that this book is dry. Unless you're really, really interested, you may struggle. The doctor does not have a very imaginative style.

The Pot Book: A Complete Guide to Cannabis Review

The Pot Book: A Complete Guide to Cannabis
Average Reviews:

I am 66, an RN, former psych nurse, didn't think I needed to know much about marijuana. Never used it before. With 3 chronic conditions, I've always looked for safer alternatives to pharmaceuticals. This book is eye-opening abt the twisted history of prohibition and the latest scientific research that can make life so much easier for those with autoimmune and neurological disorders, acute & chronic. The stigma that has been perpetuated by politicians, law enforcers - esp the DEA, the government are so easily refuted by science. Science continues to be hidden, but it is exploding.
Many people associate it with counter culture. It holds so much more promise beyond that. I am angry that I am this old and am in the field of medicine but only now am finding this information. I think of so many people who could have relief and better health. I am furious at the political machinations that have kept the truth from the public and apparently the president and people who make drug laws. There needs to be a paradigm shift where science reigns. Older people in particular have the most to benefit from its use because they are usually the ones with several chronic diseases and pain. I think AARP needs to make the information known to their members.
If you are a parent, you need to read this book to keep up and inform your kids, rather than having a knee jerk reaction. I've told my kids I wish I'd had this info when they were young. It is important to get perspective when our society is steeped in alcohol use that causes diseases and kills. All proceeds of the book go toward medical cannabis research.

The Oxygen Prescription: The Miracle of Oxidative Therapies Review

The Oxygen Prescription: The Miracle of Oxidative Therapies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Oxygen Prescription is the revised, expanded & updated 3rd edition of Oxygen Healing Therapies. It investigates the therapeutic benefits of hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen dioxide) and ozone. Their properties, application and administration are examined according to the results of studies around the globe. The good news is that these therapies promise to bring relief to millions because the substances are inexpensive and affordable. What's more, they have very few adverse effects when correctly administered.
The difference between oxidation (free radical activity) and oxygenation (increase in oxygen molecules) is made clear at the start. The clinical use of ozone and hydrogen peroxide has been amply documented in medical literature but is ignored by the medical mainstream. These two substances hold great promise for the treatment of many of the diseases afflicting mankind and they form part of a new healing paradigm involving safe, effective and natural forms of therapy. In the first part the author explains what these therapies are and takes a closer look at ozone, hydrogen peroxide and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Part two discusses oxidative therapies for a wide spectrum of conditions and diseases including cardiovascular & musculoskeletal problems, cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, an array of infections, neurodegenerative disorders, lung, skin, eye and ear diseases as well as injuries & wound healing and applications in dentistry and veterinary medicine. The author also considers the role of oxygen administration for preventive health, to ensure healthy aging and to enhance athletic performance.
Cancer has been treated with hydrogen peroxide & ozone therapy for decades, since the discovery of Nobel laureate Dr. Otto Warburg that a lack of oxygen at the cellular level enables the disease. Altman evaluates research at the Baylor University Medical Center in Texas, the Tottori University School of Medicine in Japan, Rockefeller University in New York City, the University of California at Irvine and Jackson State University in Mississippi where it was discovered that a combination of hydrogen peroxide, ethanol and the Middle Eastern herb Nigella sativa effectively inactivate cancer cells.
A holistic protocol is provided in part three, including body cleansing, an oxygenation diet, nutritional supplements & healing herbs, aerobic & breathing exercises plus the use of creative visualization. The chapter on herbs and supplements includes valuable information on inter alia beta carotene, coenzyme Q10, vitamins, minerals, trace elements like selenium, echinacea, garlic, ginkgo biloba and green tea. Under Mind-Body Healing the author discusses psycho-neuro-immunology and how to nurture positive thoughts and feelings.
Oxygen products, services and applications like ozone generators, air purifiers, ozonated drinking water, oxygenated bottled water, oxygenation products and the use of hydrogen peroxide in the home and garden are discussed in Appendix I, whilst Appendix II provides resources such as Internet addresses, details of organizations, publications, manufacturers and distributors of products, books and DVD's. The bibliography contains items on bio-oxidative, natural and complementary therapies plus works on holistic health in general.
Tables and figures illustrate the text and the book concludes with extensive notes and an index. This persuasive study provides ample proof that the safety, efficacy and wide-ranging potential applications of oxygen, ozone & hydrogen dioxide merit far more attention than they have been receiving from the media or the medical and scientific communities. The Oxygen Prescription is much more comprehensive and up-to-date than Douglass's Hydrogen Peroxide: Medical Miracle.
In an age of surging medical costs and complex procedures, many health-care consumers are searching for safe, effective and affordable therapies. By making the facts and the research results available, Altman has done an excellent job in educating consumers so they can take informed and intelligent decisions about health-care options. I strongly recommend this book to all those who wish to take responsibility for their own health.

A complete guide to oxygen therapies as a path to optimum health • Presents new scientific findings of the effectiveness of oxidative therapies in treating heart disease, cancer, herpes, HIV, hepatitis, and diabetes • Presents the evolution of these therapies, including positive trends and challenges for the future • Includes new chapters on using the therapies in dentistry and veterinary medicine Scientists now agree that most disease states are caused by oxygen starvation at a cellular level. Polluted air, devitalized foods, poor breathing habits, all can lead to chronic oxygen deficiency, a bodily environment in which toxins thrive as the overall immune response is weakened. Though we receive most of our oxygen from the air around us, even deep breathing may not be enough to improve oxygen-starved cells. Oxidative therapies generate the oxygen needed to fight disease and delay the aging process. The Oxygen Prescription is the only book to place oxidative therapies in the context of holistic health. Completely updated and expanded to include the use of these therapies in dentistry and veterinary medicine, it explores the latest scientific findings that show how ozone interacts with cells when introduced into the bloodstream. It presents treatments that stimulate the body's own ability to produce ozone to fight cancer, osteoporosis, and hepatitis and provides the evidence of how oxidative therapies are being used to treat heart disease, herpes, HIV, and diabetes. The Oxygen Prescription also shows how to enhance the effectiveness of these treatments through diet and the use of minerals, herbs, exercise, and visualization.

When Healing Becomes a Crime: The Amazing Story of the Hoxsey Cancer Clinics and the Return of Alternative Therapies Review

When Healing Becomes a Crime: The Amazing Story of the Hoxsey Cancer Clinics and the Return of Alternative Therapies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Warning, when you read this book you might be scared away from "conventional medicine"! If you are suffering of cancer or have a relative that is terminally ill and has been given up by doctors, I recommend this book as a "second opinion".
This book tells the story of how an alternative treatment was sabotaged by the medical community and by organizations that are supposed to protect our health (such as the Food and Drug Administration). As a European, I have been quite skeptical about this agency for some time, and this book doesn't help at all! The picture this book gives you is that the main reason a drug gets accepted or not might be linked to serious lobbying inside the conventional medical community and to the financial gains that are linked to it. This isn't hard to believe if you see how the tobacco lobby succeeded for years to cover up the problems smoking causes.
Yet, there is hope as far "conventional medicine" is concerned. Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) teaches doctors that they should stay current with recent research on drugs and learn how to interpret studies before administering drugs to their patients. I studied this subject in preparation of my Ph.D. I believe that EBM practices do drastically enhance our chances as patients to get the right treatment, especially if you read that 50% of doctors risk giving you a wrong or outdated treatment. No wonder many doctors admit that many patients get better DESPITE their doctor's treatment.
The problem with EBM is that apparently some often used treatments such as many current forms of chemotherapy lack the statistical data to back them up, and that doctors seem to treat patients with those cures because they don't have anything better. When I was doing my own research concerning whiplash, I was faced with a similar dilemma: conventional treatment in which patients have to wear a cervical collar may actually worsen the condition of patients. Yet 50% of MD's still prescribe it today. On the other hand, if you would recommend a patient to throw away this collar, you might be pursued form "medical malpractice".
On the other hand, I have known for years that the problem of many alternative cures (whether they are herbal remedies or psychological assistance) lies in the fact that they have not been proven scientifically. But, not being proven doesn't mean that the cure isn't valid, it only lets you know there is no way to tell. Therefore I keep trying to convince "alternative therapists" to do the necessary "homework" with regards to proving their protocols. The drama is that it doesn't pay to do the scientific research for those cures, whereas there are billions to be gained from doing research for registered drugs.
Given that the death rate of cancer today isn't much better than in the 1950s, it's no wonder that today over 60% of cancer patients supplement their conventional treatment with one or more forms of alternative treatment. Reading this book should at least help you to be a bit more skeptical to what your doctor is telling you, and to be more willing to inquire for yourself what therapy will help to cure you.

A powerful and substantiated expose of the medical politics that prevents promising alternative cancer therapies from being implemented in the United States.

' Focuses on Harry Hoxsey, the subject of the author's award-winning documentary, who claimed to cure cancer using herbal remedies.

' Presents scientific evidence supporting Hoxsey's cancer-fighting claims.

' Published to coincide with the anticipated 2000 public release of the government-sponsored report finding "noteworthy cases of survival" among Hoxsey patients.

Harry Hoxsey claimed to cure cancer using herbal remedies, and thousands of patients swore that he healed them. His Texas clinic became the world's largest privately owned cancer center with branches in seventeen states, and the value of its therapeutic treatments was upheld by two federal courts. Even his arch-nemesis, the AMA, admitted his treatment was effective against some forms of cancer. But the medical establishment refused an investigation, branding Hoxsey the worst cancer quack of the century and forcing his clinic to Tijuana, Mexico, where it continues to claim very high success rates. Modern laboratory tests have confirmed the anticancer properties of Hoxsey's herbs, and a federal govenment-sponsored report is now calling for a major reconsideration of the Hoxsey therapy.

When Healing Becomes a Crime exposes the overall failure of the War on Cancer, while revealing how yesterday's "unorthodox" treatments are emerging as tomorrow's medicine. It probes other promising unconventional cancer treatments that have also been condemned without investigation, delving deeply into the corrosive medical politics and powerful economic forces behind this suppression. As alternative medicine finally regains its rightful place in mainstream practice, this compelling book will not only forever change the way you see medicine, but could also save your life.

Organon of the Medical Art Review

Organon of the Medical Art

I found this to be one of the most comprehensive treatments of Samuel Hahnemann's groundbreaking work. It makes his masterpiece easily accessible even to a novice like me and offers great insight into the original German text. The glossary and index are indispensible additions. The effort Decker put forth in translating the original demonstrates a level of intellecual integrity and precision that even I can recognize. O'Reilly's editorial and organizational prowess is unmatched. Hahnemann would be greatly pleased by their reverant treatment of his work. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in homeopathy or alternative medicine.

Based on treating the whole patient rather than isolated symptoms, homeopathy uses minute doses of naturally derived medicine to stimulate the patient's own life force. Physician Samuel Hahnemann's pioneering text Organon of the Medical Art, first published in 1810, remains the foundation for all study in this field. Wenda O'Reilly worked with translator Stephen Decker to produce a version of the book that would preserve Hahnemann's insights while adapting it to the needs of the modern general reader. The book is restructured as a series of chapters and sections, and newly added side notes and footnotes, a contextual glossary, and an index vastly increase the book's usefulness.

' A comprehensive look at the many therapeutic and ecological uses of neem.

' Used in India for over 4,000 years, neem is one of the most popular therapeutic plants in the Indian pharmacopoeia.

' Effective in the treatment of fever, malaria, skin diseases, dental problems, diabetes, arthritis, and jaundice.

' A natural pesticide hailed by many for its diverse ecological benefits.

In India--where it has been used for more than 4,000 years--the neem tree has such a variety of medical applications that it is sometimes referred to as the village pharmacy. Now modern research is proving what has been long known by Ayurvedic medicine practitioners: neem is one of the most effective plant medicines in the world. An extremely powerful blood purifying agent and detoxicant, neem is also effective in the treatment of fever, malaria, skin diseases, dental problems, diabetes, tumors, arthritis, and jaundice. It has gained particular attention from scientists seeking a cure for AIDS, not only for its antiviral properties, but also because it boosts the immune system on all levels without destroying beneficial bacteria, unlike synthetic antibiotics.

In addition to its numerous uses as a healing agent, neem has been receiving much attention for the ecological benefits it provides. For centuries Indians have been mixing neem leaves with stored grains to prevent insect infestation. But neem is not simply a natural alternative to pesticides; increasingly it is being used to reverse desertification and to reduce erosion and deforestation, making it an important weapon in the fight against global warming. Neem's many practical applications make it of enormous interest to anyone concerned about health and ecology. Included are recipes and practical tips that let you enjoy the many benefits of this miraculous plant.

As with everything else in life, it's our relationship to it that determines our experience with it, whatever it is; in this case it's "pain." By transforming the emotions attached to our pain, Jan Sadler shows through her own self-inquiry that our relationship with pain can be a doorway to our deeper selves. If you are in chronic pain and want to avoid or get off drugs, then you need a practical guide to help you cope and find relief. The book comes with a 55-minute CD that presents techniques for pain management.

A practical, effective, and inspiring guidebook for dealing with chronic pain • Explains how to reduce pain's grip on the body and mind by changing your personal reaction to pain • Presents successful strategies from the author's 25 years of coping with her own pain • Includes 55-minute CD of author's key techniques for controlling pain In 1989, following surgery for a back injury, Jan Sadler was left in constant pain, with no hope of any further conventional treatment and no adequate prescription drug therapy. Rather than settle for a life of chronic suffering, she gave up her career teaching English and began an investigation into the self-treatment of her pain. Building on her skills as a teacher, she incorporated the pain management techniques she discovered into programs that would help other sufferers learn how to cope with pain and find truly effective relief from its debilitating effects. Sadler shows how we can reduce pain's grip by changing our personal reactions to the pain we are feeling. Chronic pain keeps our attention fixed firmly on our anguish, which then feeds the painful reaction back into our perception of being in pain, creating a vicious cycle. By allowing our reaction to become one of relaxation and acceptance, the pain is dramatically lessened, both by the absence of a negative perception and by the infusion of relaxation into the point of pain. In Pain Relief without Drugs, Sadler provides easy-to-use self-help techniques that offer support and understanding in breaking pain's cycle--from relaxation, visualization, and breathing techniques to setting goals, building self-esteem, and coping with pain flare-ups. The author's 25 years of coping with her own pain and 16 years of teaching pain management techniques result in a book that is filled with practical activities and possibilities for a better life. The book is accompanied by a 55-minute CD narrated by the author of key techniques for controlling pain.

Teach Yourself to Read Modern Medical Chinese: A Step-by-Step Workbook & Guide Review

Teach Yourself to Read Modern Medical Chinese: A Step-by-Step Workbook and Guide
Average Reviews:

I have been looking for a good review of Chinese Medical terminology to aid in my writing and translation/teaching. I am fluent in Chinese but really love to get language books for reading to see how the ideas are taught and also to practice my skills. This book I felt would be very interesting.
Indeed, I will admit it is not easy to take on the project of writing such a book. Especially when one tries to take a non-speaker of Chinese to reading advanced professional literature in one volume.
I would like to say though, I found the book not that helpful in two ways. 1) The terminology although has pinyin romanization, it lacks the intonation marks. While this book is for reading, tones added will make the book able to help those wanting to learn to speak or listen to Chinese. 2) The book is full or errors. The wrong characters are written and often the meaning is either too simple or in error...so many errors!
I hope that in future editions some of the errors can be corrected-then it would be more helpful.

The first book to address emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) from a nutritional and alternative medicine approach • Explains the benefits of detoxification, dietary changes, and food combining • Details 45 suggested herbs and 26 nutritional supplements as well as information on how to stop smoking Approximately 35 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with some form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)--emphysema constituting 18 million of that group. Worldwide, as many as 293 million people suffer with these conditions. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in America, claiming nearly 120,000 lives annually. Yet conventional approaches to treatment, with their regimens of drugs and unceasing physical therapy, provide neither cure nor significant relief. In Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD, Robert Green shows that alternative holistic therapies ranging from herbs to homeopathy offer great promise in relieving COPD's debilitating symptoms. Starting with the basics of the physiology of respiration, Green presents a comprehensive program that includes detoxification, dietary changes, nutritional supplements, and herbal medicine; breathing techniques and exercise options such as aerobics, yoga, qigong, and tai chi; and alternative therapies such as homeopathy, acupuncture, and massage--noting how and why each therapy works. The Traditional Healer's Handbook: A Classic Guide to the Medicine of Avicenna Review

The Traditional Healer's Handbook: A Classic Guide to the Medicine of Avicenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An indispensible work on Unani medicine
Fulbright Research Scholar and naturopathic physician Hakim Chishti studied traditional healing in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, and, in addition to this present work is also the author of "The Book of Sufi Healing" (Healing Arts Press, 1991).
While conducting research in Kabul, Afghanistan, the author found himself afflicted with a severe form of dysentery and - without access to Western medicine - availed himself of the care of a traditional Unani practitioner, Dr. Hajji Muhammad Sherif, whose traditional treatments were successful and to whom Dr. Chishti eventually became an apprentice. Whilst in Kabul, the author obtained a Persian language edition of Avicenna's Mizan-ul-Tibb (Canon of Medicine) and Rabat-ul-Atfal (Pediatrics) and translated both volumes into English. These form the basis of the present work.
This comprehensive guide to healing synthesizes the principles and practices of that amalgam of Greek, Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Persian medicine that today is practiced throughout the South Asian subcontinent under the name `Unani al-tibb' (i.e., Ionian or Greek medicine). It includes his translation of the two works cited above of Avicenna (Ibn al Sina, born ca. 980 CE), whose writings have been classics in herbal and dietetic medicine for more than a thousand years. Unani Medicine as a healing system was established and institutionalized by Avicenna (known as the "Prince of Physicians") yet because it is a comprehensive system encompassing virtually all of the known healing systems of the world of his day, the threads which comprise Unani can be traced uninterruptedly all the way back to Hippocrates and his disciples.
Based on the philosophy that "food is the best medicine" and that "Allah never sends a disease to humankind without providing its cure," Avicenna's Canon of Medicine provides simple and effective diagnostic techniques and therapies for maintaining and restoring health and strengthening the human organism, in particular its immune system. The book includes a detailed botanical guide for the hundred most commonly used medicinal herbs and recommended treatments for four hundred conditions, including diet and nutrition, lifestyle management, herbal therapy, and aromatherapy. Medicine and health care were perhaps the highest scientific achievements of the Muslims during the Middle Ages and the reason for such an achievement is directly related to Islam itself, both the Qur'an and the Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) strongly encouraging the gaining and scientific systematization of medical knowledge.
Chishti builds on Avicenna's approach, bringing extensive knowledge of the original Persian texts to his own twenty years' experience in Unani medicine. Included is a wealth of information on the metabolic value of foods, principles of hygiene, the prophylactic and curative roles of physical exercise and rest, the cycles, natures and classification of fevers, the classification of pain syndromes and the scope and methods of pulse diagnosis.
Subtitled "A Classic Guide to the Medicine of Avicenna," the Traditional Healer's Handbook includes a detailed introduction to Unani medicine's history, philosophy and ethics, theoretical scietific underpinnings, observations on the general practice of traditional medicine, and a materia medica of Unani botanicals along with a formulary.
Avicenna's healing system is explained and elaborated with recipes to maintain optimal immune functioning and includes protocols for the specific treatment of insomnia, depression, influenza, obesity, hemorrhoids, erectile dysfunction, dental pathologies, gastrointestinal disorders, asthma, bronchitis, and arthritis, among others.
Hakim Chishti has distilled the essence of this venerable and quite effective lineage of the healing art into a comprehensive text, clearly and engagingly written. It is an indispensable work for anyone interested in the field and I strongly commend it to anyone engaged in the study or practice of natural medicine, herbalism or any of the great healing lineages of Asia and the Middle East, and as well to students of Islam and Islamic contributions to world civilization.

Acupuncture Imaging: Perceiving the Energy Pathways of the Body Review

Acupuncture Imaging: Perceiving the Energy Pathways of the Body
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Given the two prior negative reviews, I feel its important to provide a balancing input, particularly since I did fully enjoy this small book.
There are hints given toward the end of this book about why he uses the term "imaging". With intentional experience and time devoted to Seem's style of evaluating the person, their meridians as a whole instead of just a few selected points, before touching in order to intuitively perceive ... he suggests that some people may learn to "see" energy coursing and the places where there might be obstructions. I agree the title may lead to a little disappointment. The book is more about trying to understand the deeper dynamics of energy management in the body and prodding of it by manual exam and acupuncture rather than "imaging" in the typical use of the word.
However, if one approaches the book with an open mind, there is a lot of helpful information here. It is not a comprehensive textbook on how to learn acupuncture, and does NOT pretend to be. It is assumed that one already has acquired the basics from some perspective such as TCM, 5-Elements or one of the physicians' medical acupuncture disciplines.
Bob Flaws, in his introduction to the book, describes Mark Seem as an acupuncturist's acupuncturist, referencing the fact that Seem has devoted his career and teaching to refining a particular form of acupuncture focusing on the body's innate energetic pathways that are independent of other "assists" such as herbal preparations. As such, this short book of about 100 pages, attempts to summarize a starting point for exploring acupuncture from an energetic framework. He intentionally speaks more as a philosopher and educator rather than a "technician", sharing the accumulated impressions he has gained over his career using a psychosomatic and phenomenologic approach.
His emphasize on recruiting patients to be responsible, active participants in the pursuit of their own healing, rather becoming the passive recipients of treatments or pills is refreshing. That's always a challenge no matter how much desired for most practitioners of the healing arts. He attempts to explain how he engages his patients in this process specifically for the medium of acupuncture. These efforts are quite valuable -- yet their significance may be lost when one is at the start of acupuncture training and still attempting to absorb the massive amount of required material. Its more the type of information to which one returns after reaching a plateau that prompts a need to re-think how one organizes their own approach to the discipline. I anticipate I will want to re-read it intermittently.
Seem's pre-acupuncture background was in philosophy and psychosomatics. He then trained in a Canadian school of French-Chinese energetic acupuncture. This approach became known in France dating back to the early 1900's due to the work of George Soulle' de Morant, a Frenchman who spent at least 2 decades in China, was fluent in Chinese having learning Mandarin as a child, and translated/catalogued many original manuscripts in order to document techniques of the pre-communist era while working with Chinese physicians and acupuncturists. de Morant was awarded the highest national Chinese award for civilians and was considered a Chinese Doctor among the Chinese. He eventually returned to Europe where he was known as the Father of Energetic Acupuncture. (Besides his books on acupuncture, de Morant was a prolific writer/translator on many different aspects of Chinese life and literature.)
This French-Chinese model differs from newer TCM approaches, which at least for awhile dominated China after the Maoist reform (1950's) and also dominated the American scene when acupuncture first migrated here. Seem's book does have several recognizable features in common with the training provided to physicians through the Helm's Institute, whose founder also trained in French-Chinese energetic acupuncture in France.
Mark Seem begins with a helpful historical review regarding the development of the different schools of acupuncture and why he personally became invested in the approach he uses. He is the founder of the Tri-Sate College of Acupuncture in New York City, and has been a major national leader in training and organizations for licensed acupuncturists. He acknowledges several other sources that have influenced the development of his style that an interested reader may want to pursue for further detail (such by those by Royston Lowe, Yves Requina and Kiiko Matsumoto. The latter being a particular good source for information on Japanese meridian work. )
There are a few summary tables and diagrams but no specific treatment protocols, in keeping with his phenomenological approach of following the message he encounters from the patient's body -- not some predetermined formulae attached to either an eastern or a western medical diagnosis. That's the point.
He broadly describes his journey through a treatment process from surface energetics, through tendinomuscular meridians and then to deeper interconnections among principal meridian and/or curious meridian pathways. I strongly anticipate that travelling with him through this journey will gain in meaning the more experience one gains with acupuncture if the commitment is to move beyond "cookbook recipes" for treatment protocols.
His other textbook which I have not yet read seems to likely be more comprehensive on the basics of his style, called BodyMind Energetics.

A practical guide to the bodymind-energetic approach of acupuncture

' Teaches readers to reorient their thinking in order to see, feel, and experience the energetic field of the body and psyche

' Explores French and Japanese influences on acupuncture and the resulting stylistic variations in the contemporarypractice of this ancient technique

' Includes guidance on treatment planning and implementation for practitioners and their patients

A pioneer in the field of body energetics, Mark Seem explains in Acupuncture Imaging how bodyworkers and their clients can develop a clear understanding of the energetic systems of the bodymind to arrive at a personal approach and treatment style in acupuncture and all other meridian therapies. He shows how to recast and reconceptualize physical, emotional, and psychological problems in terms of disrupted energy flow, enabling readers to see, feel, and experience these disturbances in a way that allows for change. By approaching the meridian systems in visual and sensory terms, a practitioner is able to tell the energetic 'story" that he or she is exploring with a patient, thereby guiding and assisting the healing process. Acupuncture Imaging will be of great help to students, teachers, practitioners, and patients of the diverse energetic and meridian therapies, particularly shiatsu and acupressure, as well as psychotherapists and those interested in Eastern concepts of medicine.

This text is BRILLIANT! Ken Dillon, PhD is the author of the definitive book about Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation therapy. I have read other texts on this subject over the years and am happy to say that Dr. Dillon's book is rated #1 in my opinion. I have used this therapy on thousands of clients and have witnessed incredible results in respect to their healing. One does not need medications, surgery, or chemotherapy. This book explains the biophysics behind how to stimulate the body's own healing power by using UBI! This book is a quick read for both layperson and clinician. There is no fluff, no hype, just facts and the medical study references from the past to back the text up. Anyone in alternative medicine MUST read this book and have it in their personal or office medical library. This text, provided the service is offered will revolutionize alternative medicine. This book, for practitioners who use IV therapies is a must own.
