(More customer reviews)For anyone with an interest in the history of medicine, this book is a fascinating introduction. It's richly illustrated with museum-quality examples of period equipment, from original Laennec stethescopes to bloodletting instruments. The text is well-written, and shows the author's broad expertise with medical and scientific history. There are many quotes directly from centuries-old source material which help the reader understand the context and mindset of physicians who practiced their art so long before any understanding of anatomy and physiology. The final chapter on medical quackery is a wonderful review of the often humorous (and sometimes sad!) ways that charlatans have learned to take advantage of even well-educated people-- and gives great insight into how these same tricks are still being played.
I would particularly recommend this book for any student entering medical school or thinking of pursuing a medically-related career in nursing, dentistry, or pharmacy. It's beautifully bound and put-together, and would make a great gift.

(More customer reviews)This is a modern pharmacology text on herbs and prescriptions. Unlike some older texts this fine reference book includes many features not found elsewhere. It includes photographic pictures of each herb and provides in both simplified and traditional Chinese characters. The chemical composition is badly needed as both modern pharmacists and patients alike need to know what they are dealing with, other than just exotic PinYin names. The pharmacological interactions and author's comments are also welcomed as the effectiveness from modern clinical studies are required in any modern medical book. The only inconvenience I found is that the constant use of this 1200+ page book caused sore on my thumb and fingers. As more and more updates are added, frequent users would prefer a digital source (e.g., XHTML, XML etc) to get the latest update. The advantage of hypertext will allow one to navigate quickly with the click of a mouse without having to flip through pages or using indices. At present, 23% of medical professionals are now using an online source and it is expected more and more will do so to stay current. In sum, this is a highly useful book which will get to its place.

Teach Yourself to Read Modern Medical Chinese: A Step-by-Step Workbook & Guide Review

(More customer reviews)I have been looking for a good review of Chinese Medical terminology to aid in my writing and translation/teaching. I am fluent in Chinese but really love to get language books for reading to see how the ideas are taught and also to practice my skills. This book I felt would be very interesting.
Indeed, I will admit it is not easy to take on the project of writing such a book. Especially when one tries to take a non-speaker of Chinese to reading advanced professional literature in one volume.
I would like to say though, I found the book not that helpful in two ways. 1) The terminology although has pinyin romanization, it lacks the intonation marks. While this book is for reading, tones added will make the book able to help those wanting to learn to speak or listen to Chinese. 2) The book is full or errors. The wrong characters are written and often the meaning is either too simple or in error...so many errors!
I hope that in future editions some of the errors can be corrected-then it would be more helpful.
