It has 14 chapters which cover: 1) What is Reiki?, 2) The History of the Usui System of Reiki, 3) How Reiki differs from other healing methods, 4) Reiki for personal healing, 5) Reiki Treatments, 6) Combining Reiki with other methods of healing, 7) Other ways of using Reiki, 8) Reiki with chronic illness, 9) Reiki for self-development and spiritual growth, 10) The First Degree class, 11) The Second Degree class, 12) The Third Degree or Master's Training, 13) How to find a Reiki Master 14) Becoming a Reiki Practitioner.
My favorite parts of this book is the best quality and largest photo of Dr. Usui which gives true meaning to the saying "A picture is worth a thousand words." The section about when not to use Reiki (don't give after a pre-operative anaesthetic has been administered or during an operation. And much more info I'll need to know as a nurse.) Also, I learned "If a person is suffering from a particularly severe complaint, it might be wiser to avoid the problem area completely for the time being, allowing the energy to flow through from the other areas and reabalance the system in that way." Unfortunately I learned this after the fact of touching the upper arm of my pastor who had rotator cuff surgery. I had to stop because he was so tense me getting anywhere near his shoulder. Also I should have asked first if I could do Reiki which I also learned in this book. There is just a world of information inside! My very favorite part I will write out as it is only a paragraph on page 72 but I've used it and it is so powerful I can hardly believe it!
"Using Reiki to Balance the Chakras: Sitting in a chair, place one hand on the forehead and one on the back of the neck. Then place both hands on the shoulders. After this, place one hand on the chest and one on the back. Next, place one hand on the solar plexus and one hand on the corresponding position on the back. Finally place one hand on the abdomen and one hand on the tailbone. This short treatment will balance the chakras effectively."
Note: I did this exercise [above] as a first level healer and it worked just as strong as where I am now at second level! It really works! Try it after having/viewing an attunement. A good attunement dvd I recommend is the Reiki: First level attunement by Steve Murray offered here at Amazon. o8E
Soar!

Click Here to see more reviews about: Reiki: The Essential Guide to the Ancient Healing Art

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force Energy. Drawing on ancient practices, Reiki balances the energy in the body, renewing vitality and bringing about a powerful feeling of serenity and relaxation through the laying on of hands. Reiki can be used to relieve the problems associated with stress, tension, chronic illness and post-operative pain. In this revised and updated edition, Chris and Penny Parkes explain what to expect from a treatment, how it works and how it can be of benefit—and even show how you too can train to practice Reiki.

Click here for more information about Reiki: The Essential Guide to the Ancient Healing Art
Patricia J. Peterson (University of Connecticut Health Center, Biodynamics Laboratory, farming, Connecticut) and Joseph D. Bronzino (recipient of the Millennium Award from IEEE/EMBS in 2000 and the Gaddard Award from Worcester Polytechnic Institute for Professional Achievement in June 2004), "Biomechanics: Principles And Applications" is a collection of twenty informed and informative articles on various aspects of, and researches into, the science of biomechanics. The contributors address everything from applications on system-level aspects of the human body (the musculoskeletal system, auditory system, lymphatic system, the cardiovascular system), to biological sub-systems (tissues, cells, molecules). Drawn from the third edition of the "Biomedical Engineering Handbook", these seminal articles introduce current methods and strategies for modeling cellular mechanices, present topics in biofluid mechanics, feature more than 140 illustrations and 60 tables, and provide a number of useful equations to assist in modeling biomechanical behaviors. A volume of truly impressive scholarship, "Biomechanics: Principles And Applications" should be a core acquisition selection for every academic library reference collection on the subject, as well as on the supplemental reading lists for students of Biomechanical Engineering.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Biomechanics: Principles and Applications, Second Edition

Traditionally, applications of biomechanics will model system-level aspects of the human body. As a result, the majority of technological progress to date appears in system-level device development. More recently, biomechanical initiatives are investigating biological sub-systems such as tissues, cells, and molecules. Fueled by advances in experimental methods and instrumentation, these initiatives, in turn, directly drive the development of biological nano- and microtechnologies.
A complete, concise reference, Biomechanics integrates coverage of system and sub-system models, to enhance overall understanding of human function and performance and open the way for new discoveries. Drawn from the third edition of the widely acclaimed and bestsellingThe Biomedical Engineering Handbook, this is a comprehensive, state-of-the-science resource concerning the principles and applications of biomechanics at every level. The book presents substantial updates and revisions from the Handbook's previous editions, as well as an entirely new chapter introducing current methods and strategies for modeling cellular mechanics. Organized in a systematic manner, the book begins with coverage of musculoskeletal mechanics including hard- and soft tissue and joint mechanics and their applications to human function. Contributions explore several aspects of biofluid mechanics and cover a wide range of circulatory dynamics such as blood vessel and blood cell mechanics and transport.
Other topics include the mechanical functions and significance of the human ear and the performance characteristics of the human body during exercise and exertion. The book contains more than 140 illustrations, 60 tables, and a variety of useful equations to assist in modeling biomechanical behaviors. Incorporating material across the breadth of the field, Biomechanics is a complete, concise reference for the skilled professional as well as an introduction to the novice or student of biomedical engineering.

Get 14% OFF

Click here for more information about Biomechanics: Principles and Applications, Second Edition
Patricia J. On the other hand, it is a difficult and demanding book to read cover to cover, and most readers will probably prefer to focus on areas of particular personal interest rather than tackling the whole volume at one go.
Chapter 1, entitled "The origin of coarticulation", discusses what causes coarticulation, a history of the investigation of coarticulation, and how coarticulation develops in children¡¦s speech. A series of coarticulatory models is reviewed, including Lindblom's 'target undershoot' model of the 1960s (p. 16), Oehman's observation that two vowels interact with each other across intervening stops (p. 17), Wickelgren's idea that we store not phonemes in our brains but collections of context-sensitive allophones (p. 18), up to Keating's 'window' model of the 1980s (p. 21), in which every feature of a segment is associated with a range of values rather than an absolute target.
Part II is entitled "Research results: components of the motor system for speech". Each chapter features a key articulatory organ or organ complex: the velopharyngeal complex, the tongue, the larynx, the lips, and the lips and jaws.
Part III provides a home, under the catch-all classification of "Wider perspectives", for two chapters that did not quite fit elsewhere, "Cross-language studies on articulation" and "Implications for phonological theory".
The chapters of part IV, "Instrumental Techniques", report on the state of the art of various specialized methods and instruments for performing articulatory and acoustic measurements. The methods presented are: palatography, X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, electromagnetic articulography (EMMA), electromyography, transducers for investigating velopharyngeal function (including aerometry, electromyography, various acoustic methods, radiography, endoscopy, photodetection, various mechanical devices, ultrasound, MRI, and EMMA), and techniques for investigating laryngeal articulation (including fibreoptic endoscopy, transillumination, electromyography, pulse-echo ultrasound, acoustic analysis with inverse filtering, glottography, and the Sondhi tube).
The final chapter of the book addresses use of the spectrograph and other acoustic tools in studying coarticulatory phenomena. This chapter gives examples of how to do acoustic analysis of formant transitions, the stable portion of a vowel, stop release, fricative noise, nasals, liquids and glides, voicing and tone, and duration and intensity. This is a laudable beginning, but there is room for much more to be done in this area.
While this book is overall very tight in structure and rich in content, it is not by any means the do-all, end-all work on coarticulation. There are a number of areas not covered in this book that I would like to have seen, and hope to see in future works, such as: what really happens between *words* in running discourse?
This book is a good beginning of more serious and concentrated work on coarticulatory phenomena than has previously been seen. Hopefully many more such studies will follow.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Coarticulation: Theory, Data and Techniques (Cambridge Studies in Speech Science and Communication)

Coarticulation means the overlapping gestures that occur during the pronunciation of any sequence of speech sounds. This topic in the science of phonetics provides a challenge to speech production theory as well as to various projects in the field of speech technology, including that of building a natural sounding speech synthesizer. The eighteen chapters in this book cover the experimental techniques used for investigating the phenomenon, the experimental findings to date, and the theoretical background.

Get 7% OFF

Click here for more information about Coarticulation: Theory, Data and Techniques (Cambridge Studies in Speech Science and Communication)
Patricia J. Why? How did it get so vehement? So an attempt at perspective is definitely welcome.
Stearns reports that before the 1890s, plumpness was preferred, and signals began to change only as fashions, fat-control devices, and increased public comment on fat began to emerge in the decade prior to 1900.
After that, the trend grew and intensified over an entire century. Stearns sees this growing obsession as a "compensation" for our indulgence in other pleasures about which we are ambivalent--consumerism, sex, women's freedom. As long as we demonstrate strict discipline about our body size as a kind of puritanical guilt-laden compensation, we can allow ourselves these other indulgent, consumerist pleasures.

Stearns likens the vehemence of fat hatred to Calvinism: only the elect (thin) are "saved," glorified through "salvation" stories of heroic weight loss, and rewarded with welcome entry to the cultural pleasures now available. Those who fail or refuse to measure up to the strict standards of slenderness are punished by being relegated to "fat hell" where open season--in the form of attacks and endless analyses of moral failings, character flaws, and psychological weaknesses--is allowed, imprisoning the recalcitrants in the consequences of their supposedly deplorable lack of self-discipline. Clothes, love, and the good life are not to be theirs.
By way of contrast, the French, who have equally strict standards of slenderness, are committed not to compensation for other pleasures but to high aesthetic standards of beauty. In France, fat is not an indication of moral or psychological weakness but is simply an offense against beauty--fat is just ugly. Divergence from the norm is not considered blameworthy but is assumed to be remedied fairly easily with a little restraint and maybe some reducing creams. With a little work, no one *need* be ugly. It is, therefore, the personal responsibility of each individual to make those moderate efforts and meet the beauty standards amidst an environment of reminders and encouragement.
The result? Both patterns are oppressive, unrelenting, and rigid, but the French are 14 pounds lighter on average and weight in France has been declining rather than increasing.
Stearns does not see that historical French patterns or approaches can be adopted in the U.S. However, he notes that merely recognizing another, different pattern opens the door for reconsideration of U.S. attitudes. Those attitudes were shaped over a century; they can also be reshaped.
Stearns believes that we place too much responsibility on individuals for what are, essentially, social issues. To require everyone to immerse themselves in personal battles against weight while indulgence and excess in all other areas remains unaddressed in the public arena seems not only unfair but unbalanced. Basically, Stearns hopes we will lighten up a little on individual weight issues and look more seriously at larger cultural indulgences.
Simply for the effort to bring historical perspective to the issue, the book gets four stars. But it is sometimes a frustrating read. It is fraught with equivocations and reminders that many factors are at play, all of which preclude crispness. It is not until the very end that clarity begins to emerge from the discussion.
And finally, it describes the scene without benefit of factors that could, conceivably, change all the rules and the analysis as it relates to new trends. If, as research is increasingly showing, fat and related major diseases are common in cultures based on animal-based diets and uncommon in cultures based on plant-based diets, the emphasis shifts from "how much" one is eating to "what" one is eating; from "restraint" to "plenty" without weight gain.
Such a major shift in our understanding of food, nutrition, disease, body weight, and nutrition medicine would shift blame from individuals to a diet that we thought served us but in fact did not. This would chart a very different course--and analysis--for the new century.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Fat History: Bodies and Beauty in the Modern West

Click here for more information about Fat History: Bodies and Beauty in the Modern West
Patricia J. The records of disciplinary proceedings offer a penetrating, and largely ignored, perspective on how lawyers misbehave. Because the lawyers' professional lives are at stake, the factual records are extraordinarily detailed and the lawyers surprisingly open about their motivations and justifications. In Lawyers on Trial, Richard L. Abel presents the stories of ten California lawyers who broke the rules: hiring an ex-cop to chase ambulances, flouting fee limitations in medical malpractice cases, creating a fictitious company and impersonating non-existent people in order to appropriate Sega's computer games, a former California Real Estate Commissioner defrauding developers and financiers, helping a represented co-defendant negotiate a plea without his lawyer's participation or knowledge, and defying a judge's sealing order and his own client's wishes for closure in order to champion the "defenseless" and "oppressed" and protect "widows and children." The book begins by showing how nearly a century of political struggle over self-regulation shapes the way the disciplinary system selects and processes cases and concludes by canvassing reforms that could improve the performance of the legal profession.Lawyers on Trial will be invaluable for those contemplating law school, law students and teachers of professional responsibility, continuing legal education classes, lawyers encountering ethical dilemmas in their practice or trying to understand misbehaving colleagues, members of the public thinking of retaining a lawyer, and clients dealing with their own lawyers.

Get 69% OFF

Click here for more information about Lawyers on Trial: Understanding Ethical Misconduct
Patricia J. It provides a definition of plant hallucinogens and information on phytochemical research on sacred plants, geography of usage and botanical range, the chemical structures of these substances and the use of hallucinogens in medicine.
The plant species discussed include the Amanita (Fly Agaric) mushroom, Atropa (Deadly Nightshade), Yellow and Black Henbane, Mandrake, Cannabis Ergot, Datura, Iboga, Yopo beans, Ayahuasca, Yage, Brugmansia, Peyote, the San Pedro cactus, the Morning Glory plus what the authors term "the little flowers of the gods" which include the various types of Psilocybe mushroom.
The text is enhanced by a wonderful variety of color and black & white photographs, illustrations and quite impressive paintings. The section Overview Of Plant Use consists of tables listing every plant's common name, botanical name, historical ethnography, context and purpose of usage, preparation and the chemical composition and effects.
Plants Of The Gods is a great and detailed investigation of entheogenic plants from around the world. This valuable reference book concludes with a bibliography and index.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Plants of the Gods: Their Sacred, Healing, and Hallucinogenic Powers

World-renowned anthropologist and ethnopharmacologist Christian Ratsch provides the latest scientific updates to this classic work on psychoactive flora by two eminent researchers.
' Numerous new and rare color photographs complement the completely revised and updated text.

' Explores the uses of hallucinogenic plants in shamanic rituals throughout the world.

' Cross-referenced by plant, illness, preparation, season of collection, and chemical constituents.

' First edition sold 33,000 copies.

Three scientific titans join forces to completely revise the classic text on the ritual uses of psychoactive plants. In the traditions of every culture, plants have been highly valued for their nourishing, healing, and transformative properties. The most powerful of those plants, which are known to transport the human mind into other dimensions of consciousness, have always been regarded as sacred. The authors detail the uses of hallucinogens in sacred shamanic rites while providing lucid explanations of the biochemistry of these plants and the cultural prayers, songs, and dances associated with them. That applies to this book. It's much funnier and rueful than I realize the first time.
It's also not recommended unless you have a dark sense of humor, and understand that it's not about Rent or Broadway really, but about some of the subtle ways that history gets revised by the winners. It's a brilliant book and I often had those moments of recognition where I got goose bumps reading a paragraph. Then I would laugh at the next paragraph.
I think that people who read this ONLY because they are fans of Rent will be mystified or offended. Rent is a moving show, but it IS sort of odd for urban gays - it's kind of like reading a Hitler biography devoted solely to his being a wonderful father and compassionate family man. . . It may be true, but you have to scratch your head and wonder how the author managed to completely avoid mentioning the holocaust even once in 1000 pages, and just what was his agenda in doing so.
It is clear that Ms. Schulman's book was completely stolen by Larson. However! As she points out, the theft of the plot is not really a problem, cause plot borrowing and character theft is common practice; what she regards as the sore spot is that, in stealing those elements, Larson inadvertently did the same thing that bigots and the media often deliberately do to gays and lesbians: in the same way that the winning side of a war gets to decide what version of the war goes down in history as the TRUE version, Jonathan Larson's made-up version of the AIDS epidemic will be written on most people's hearts as the true version, when in reality it is a powerful distortion of who and what actually happened - unfortunately wrapped in some excellent theater so it is more likely to burn into people's brains as the truth.
I didn't expect so much humor from a book that makes those sorts of points. I laughed repeatedly when reading this book, starting with the introduction.
Also, as I've come to expect with her books, Ms. Schulman manages to find the words to explain things I've always sensed but not been able to articulate. The section on marketing to gays (who, as she puts it, are still struggling with post-traumatic stress as a result of being raised in this society) was brilliant, and funny. An instance where she really stopped me in my tracks: when she compared gays and lesbians to a older relative of hers who was freed from a Nazi concentration camp and shortly afterwards had a small breakdown when trying to choose what color drinking glass to buy from a shelf of glassware that came in too many colors, sizes and shapes.
My advice to potential readers: Schulman is more like Sondheim than the Sound of Music. If you're a Broadway boy with a good heart and not much critical faculty, don't read it and you'll live happy. If you're a Broadway fan with a brain, you'll find it's not really about Broadway but rather an interesting tap dance on the subject of how things get twisted around. If you've got a political sensibility of any type, and maybe you're much older and wiser -- and you read the book with a tone of voice that's rueful and ironic much more than just angry, you'll love it. It brings out all the humor, which appears on every page, and makes me laugh even in public places.
People in Trouble were not one of my favorite novels of hers, but having read stage-struck, I now enjoyed it much more. Empathy is her funniest novel, but most experimental, and Rat Bohemia a truly angry ranting novel (and I mean it in the best Victor Hugo-if-he-were-a women sense of the word).
I'd recommend Shimmer as a more 'traditional' linear story line sort of novel - it's quite beautiful. I give this book 4 stars not because it's not wonderful, but because I liked Empathy better and so needed to keep one star extra if I ever review that book online. :-)

Click Here to see more reviews about: Stagestruck: Theater, AIDS, and the Marketing of Gay America

Get 5% OFF

Click here for more information about Stagestruck: Theater, AIDS, and the Marketing of Gay America
Patricia J. I first obtained a copy of this book nearly 5 years ago, when I was a lecturer at the University of Auckland. I thought the book was excellent then and the subsequent passage of time has reinforced my view.
I refer to my copy constantly. When I am dealing with a new and complicated topic as part of my work my first instinct is to check if Smith and Atchison have anything to say on the topic, and I'm usually rewarded. They nearly always provide good introductory material and analytical tools. The book contains very basic level material which is suitable for undergraduates in the area of clinical optics and develops these concepts to postgrad and research levels.
The section on aberrations is extremely useful, although it does not use the Zernike polynomials that have become popular in the last few years, it has still allowed me to do useful analysis of my data. I have also found the sections on optical quality calculations extremely useful, and the appendices on schematic eyes are the most complete I've come across in the literature.
I look forward to many subsequent editions of this text. An excellent book for researchers and students.

Click Here to see more reviews about: The Eye and Visual Optical Instruments

A wide variety of optical instruments exists in which the human eye forms an integral part of the system. This book provides a detailed description of the visual ergonomics of such instruments. The book begins with a section on image formation and basic optical components. The authors then discuss various optical instruments that can be adequately described using geometrical optics, and follow this with a section on diffraction and interference, and the instruments based on these effects. There are separate sections devoted to ophthalmic instruments and aberration theory, with a final section covering visual ergonomics in depth. Containing many problems and solutions, this book will be of great use to undergraduate and graduate students of optometry, optical design, optical engineering, and visual science, and to professionals working in these and related fields.

Click here for more information about The Eye and Visual Optical Instruments
Patricia J. It offers a brief, convincing, commonsense approach to the emotional problems faced by people with cancer, and there is considerable evidence for its effectiveness. Since the first edition of this book in 1989 (published as Psychological Therapy for Patients with Cancer) there have been many developments in cognitive therapy and psycho-oncology which have been incorporated in the new edition. The current evidence for the effect of psychological state on survival and the efficacy of CBT in cancer is reviewed.Using a cognitive behavioural model to understand reactions to cancer, the authors present cognitive, behavioural, emotional and interpersonal interventions to help people adjust to the threat to their life and their view of themselves.Case examles illustrate how these techniques are used to reduce anxiety and depression, induce a fighting spirit, teach effective coping skills and develop open communication between patients and their partners. Mental health professionals working in oncologu and health care professionals interested in psychological management will find this a useful source for psychological techniques that can be applied in a busy clinical setting.

Get 20% OFF

Click here for more information about Cognitive Behaviour Therapy For People With Cancer
Patricia J. Language isn't merely articulation and hearing of sounds. Organization of meaning, understanding, cognition, feeling and reasonable action are particularly important especially concerning the understanding of other people's feeling and knowledge.
The book emphasizes the contrast of neural and formal structure analysis. According to Helmut Schnelle as a consequence, interdisciplinary research cannot be avoided.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Language in the Brain

Linguistics, neurocognition, and phenomenological psychology are fundamentally different fields of research. Helmut Schnelle provides an interdisciplinary understanding of a new integrated field in which linguists can be competent in neurocognition and neuroscientists in structure linguistics. Consequently the first part of the book is a systematic introduction to the function of the form and meaning-organising brain component - with the essential core elements being perceptions, actions, attention, emotion and feeling. Their descriptions provide foundations for experiences based on semantics and pragmatics. The second part is addressed to non-linguists and presents the structural foundations of currently established linguistic frameworks. This book should be serious reading for anyone interested in a comprehensive understanding of language, in which evolution, functional organisation and hierarchies are explained by reference to brain architecture and dynamics.

Get 74% OFF

Click here for more information about Language in the Brain
Patricia J. They were all so poorly written and talked about antiquated theories of counseling and therapy. Now, finally there is a wonderfully readable text and I am glad to have found it as I begin work with clients. This book is for anyone who is interested in using art in their work with adults, children, adolescents, and groups-- there are helpful chapters on trauma, medical issues, autism, ADHD, etc. There are also sections on art therapy assessments that are very well written and concise.
This is the state-of-the-art art therapy book for your counseling, psychology, or art therapy library. Demonstrated are interventions for children, adolescents, and adults facing a variety of clinical problems and life challenges. Case-based chapters from leading practitioners illuminate major theoretical perspectives, including psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, developmental, and other approaches. Also examined is what current research in psychology and neuroscience can tell us about the scientific basis for art therapy. Discussing applications in individual psychotherapy, couple and family treatment, and group work, the Handbook includes over 100 samples of drawings and other artwork. The process of art therapy is illustrated in helping clients manage and cope with such problems as trauma, sexual abuse, developmental and learning disabilities, drug and alcohol misuse, serious mental illness, and medical illness. Appendices include descriptions of empirically supported approaches to art-based assessment, some of which are written by the instrument developers themselves.

Get 12% OFF

Click here for more information about Handbook of Art Therapy
Patricia J. The creative recycling of tattered stockings, dyed in soft hues, is just one of many innovations that made Grenfell hooked mats highly collectible folk art. In "Silk Stocking Mats," Paula Laverty chronicles the development of a local craft into an art form. For generations, Newfoundland women had augmented their family's unreliable fishing income with a 'matting season' in February and March. Through the Grenfell Mission's Industrial Department, set up in 1909 to help develop cottage industries, the mat industry became an increasingly important source of income reaching peak production in the late 1920s and early 1930s when the women's mats became renowned for their strong design, meticulous craftsmanship, and distinctive northern images chronicling life in the north. Reindeer, sled dog teams, polar bears, schooners, outports, and florals are but a few of the mat designs."Silk Stocking Mats" is the result of over seventeen years of exhaustive research and draws on personal interviews with older women who recall their hooking days, the study of hundreds of archival documents, and careful examination of countless Grenfell hooked mats. Laverty's book is beautifully illustrated with photographs and descriptions including rare and unusual as well as common mat designs.

Click here for more information about Silk Stocking Mats: Hooked Mats of the Grenfell Mission
Patricia J. In many instances, these maternal effects may be the single most important contributor to variation in offspring fitness. This book explores the wide variety of maternal effects that have evolved in plants and animals as mechanisms of adaptation to temporally and spatially heterogeneous environments. Topics range from the evolutionary implications of maternal effects to the assessment and measurement of maternal effects. Four detailed case studies are also included. This book represents the first synthesis of the current state of knowledge concerning the evolution of maternal effects and their adaptive significance.

Click here for more information about Maternal Effects As Adaptations
Patricia J. Wow, what a stimulating discovery, and what fun! Besides the skeletal and musculature illustrations, "Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist" is full of Peck's own drawings of basic anatomical features. These are not just the "final" drawings, like the master prints in Hale, but the beginning "rough sketches". I find this delightful because every beginner needs some inspirational guidance in drawing's first steps. A simple rough sketch of a nose, with shading; or bones drawn as a simple hinge joint, an arm or leg.... Peck's general reduction of the human figure to basic shapes is of inestimable help. The reader may just find himself saying, "Hey, I can do THAT!!!" And that is the wonderful thing about PECK's book.
Peck has impeccable credentials and must be compared to Robert Beverly Hale. Peck's is not merely an alternate duplication of the same material Hale covers. There is a 'personal' touch in Peck; but the problem with any/all anatomy books, for beginners, is that they are simply intimidating, in their detail, their precision, their absolute realism. PECK overcomes this anatomical intimidation. I would venture that PECK ought to be included in at least the first several "drawing" books that one acquires. Sometimes it seems that several pages offer more practical instruction to a new student than entire chapters in the books coming out in recent years with gimmicky titles.
"Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist," in combination with any beginning book on figure drawing is a must. With Famous Artist's School, Willy Pogany, Walt Reed, Jack Hamm, Viktor Perard and similar instruction, any ...................
book-buyer / beginning artist will find themselves advancing steadily. I rate this in the top 4 of figure drawing books for the beginner.
The chapter on "Distinctions of Age, Sex, And Race" is highly useful. PECK may be in danger of getting shoved aside with time and the publication of new pablum texts containing nothing new or vital; but PECK has written a timeless text that commands respect. CARPE DIEM [Seize the day!] I rate this book a very deserved 5 stars*

Click Here to see more reviews about: Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist (Galaxy Books)

Stephen Rogers Peck's Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist remains unsurpassed as a manual for students. It includes sections on bones, muscles, surface anatomy, proportion, equilibrium, and locomotion. Other unique features are sections on the types of human physique, anatomy from birth to old age, an orientation on racial anatomy, and an analysis of facial expressions. There a number of texts out there, but as this one was relatively inexpensive, and not terribly long so that I could get through it in a reasonable amount of time, I gave it a try.
I would recommend this book. It starts out relatively basic, repeating some of the information in the academy's basic science series, which is fine because some may not have read those books already. After that I found that it went into the appropriate amount of detail without getting bogged down in study results, physics, or other minutia. However, for a book focused on angiography, some may miss the minutia and detail. Most of the book is dedicated to angiogram findings in various disease states. The text is very readable with good summaries at the end of each chapter. At times though, the text is rather bland. The pictures are also of reasonable quality but a little small. While there is discussion of ICG angiography, fluorescein angiography is definitely covered in greater detail. I would recommend this book for those wishing to increase their knowledge of angiography and interpreting angiograms. It is at the very least, an excellent starting point, and is a bargain for the money (paid $36 for it).
There are now other books available by Agarwal and another by Shelly. My personal favorite is the one by Yanuzzi and G. Richard.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Fluorescein and Indocyanine Green Angiography: Technique and Interpretation (Ophthalmology Monographs)

The increasing use of indocyanine green angiography in recent years makes this book a valuable resource.Provides a detailed introduction to ICG angiography, covering its unique vocabulary and methodology. Also describes normal choroidal filling phases as they occur in two healthysubjects.

Click here for more information about Fluorescein and Indocyanine Green Angiography: Technique and Interpretation (Ophthalmology Monographs)
Patricia J. Subsections of the book progress from types of data, to statistical methods, to disease mapping and clustering, then end with exposures and links to health. Each subsection includes at least one chapter presenting spatial analytical theory, one chapter providing an overview of spatial analytical methods, one chapter reviewing a particular spatial analytical method in depth, a chapter applying a method, and one specialty chapter. Authors have included equations, comprehensive examples from both chronic and infectious diseases, and extensive references to other chapters and other works for each method presented. Earlier chapters provide a thorough background discussion of data issues that will be particularily useful to novices in the field. Statistical chapters assume intermediate or more advanced experience with spatial analysis, however, provide references to background and seminal works that will allow novices to the field to optimize their learning experience. There are several chapters devoted to cluster analysis, Bayesian analysis, and modeling which are particularily useful.
Overall, this is a very useful book for researchers at any level of experience with spatial analysis. This is essentially the underpinnings of the attitude the Rolfer should consider when approaching a potential client. This book which is an amalgam of the wit and witticisms of Ida Rolf more or less defines the attitude of the Rolfer, the mind-set in which one is to take as a form of preparation. Rolfing is not a therapy, nor is it out to cure any ailments, disease or otherwise - it is aimed at elevating ones health for maximum mobility. The body is desgined to move, however, there are obstrctions that we are not always entirely aware of. Although gravity is constantly at play with us every day, we do not take into account the effects of gravity on the body. In Ida's understanding, gravity means structure, which also means relationships. Not just relation of the muscles to eachother and to the bones, but the body to the earth, the body with gravity. What is that relationship? The feet has to move along with with earth, to feel the ground, rather than resist or flatten as if it were a land mover itself. Gravity can be worked 'with' rather than against, which is the whole intention of Rolfing. This book is an easy read, however, because it is thought provoking to the person who is interested in Rolfing, you may want to enjoy some of Ida's brilliance and knowledge in her work. 'Rolfing and Physical Reality' is a good companion to her major work 'Rolfing' which explains the anatomical aspects of the body that has been shifted and unset. While the latter works as a presentation for the appreciation and observations for the Rolfer, this book acts as the thread for the Rolfers mind. I reccomend one with the other and should be read in tandem.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Rolfing and Physical Reality

A warm and wise self-portrait of the woman who originated the therapy that bears her name. Here, Ida Rolf tells about her life, about the wonder of the human body, about life in general, and about Rolfing in particular, explaining her technique of manipulating muscle tissue to allow the body to come into its correct alignment.
After Rolfing, your body has been encouraged to do what it wants to do--you move with ease, your lungs take in more air, and you are taller (and therefore, slimmer).

Get 32% OFF

Click here for more information about Rolfing and Physical Reality
Patricia J. Themajor debates in language acquisition theory today focus not on whether there aresome sensitivities to syntactic information but rather which sensitivities areavailable to children and how they might be translated into the organizingprinciples that get syntactic learning off the ground. The Origins of Grammarpresents a synthesis of work done by the authors, who have pioneered one of the mostimportant methodological advances in language learning in the past decade: theintermodal preferential looking paradigm, which can be used to assess lexical andsyntactic knowledge in children as young as 13 months. In addition to drawingtogether their groundbreaking empirical work, the authors use these results todescribe a theory of language learning that emphasizes the role of multiple cues andforces in development. They show how infants shift their reliance on differentaspects of the linguistic input, moving from a bias to attend to prosodicinformation to a reliance on semantic information, and finally to a reliance on thesyntax itself.Viewing language acquisition as the product of a biased learner whotakes advantage of the information available from a variety of sources in his or herenvironment, The Origins of Grammar provides a new way of thinking about the processof language comprehension. The analysis borrows insights from theories about thedevelopment of mental models, models of early cognitive development and systemstheory, and is presented in a way that will be accessible to cognitive anddevelopmental psychologists.

Click here for more information about The Origins of Grammar: Evidence from Early Language Comprehension (Language, Speech, and Communication)
Patricia J. It is both a good place to start in understanding what is currently known about the amygdala and a useful reference for more amygdala-experienced persons. It is too technical for the general reader, but understandable to anyone with a basic, college-level understanding of biopsychology and brain anatomy.
The book covers what is known about the circuitry of the amygdala itself and how it relates to the rest of the brain in both humans and primates. There are a lot of useful illustrations and tables that list the connections. Later chapters become more conceptual and discuss what these connections or their absense means for the function of the brain or the animal. Various disorders are discussed, including Alzheimer's disease.
There is a lot of emphasis on the issue of the amygdala processing emotions, especially fear and anger. There is discussion about emotionally-charged imagery and its effect on the brain through the processing by the amygdala. Unfortunately, the nature of creativity wasn't pursued more, but that is largely due to how far research has been able to go so far. Nonetheless, there are some interesting implications about how and why we experience visual art.
This is an excellent reference book, although I read it cover-to-cover, skimming over the more data-oriented text. It could easily be as useful to anyone studying mind states, philosophers, more science-oriented artists, or persons studying isses of perception as it would be to any number of scientists. I recommend it both as an excellent document and a great read.

Click Here to see more reviews about: The Amygdala: A Functional Analysis

The amygdala is a central component of the limbic brain system and is known to be vital to understanding aspects of emotions, memory and social behavior. Dysfuction of the structure is also thought to contribute to a variety of disorders, including autism, Alzheimer's Disease and schizophrenia. The nature of its contribution to these fundamental aspects of behavior and cognition, and its relationship with other regions of the brain has remained elusive. However, since Aggleton's first book on the subject - The Amygdala: Neurobiological Aspects of Emotion, Memory, and Mental Dysfunction (1992) - there have been some major advances in our understanding of the processes involved and a dramatic rise in the volume of research. Scientists are now able to define its contribution in an increasingly precise manner. Leading experts from around the world have contributed chapters to this comprehensive and unique review, describing current thinking on the enigmatic brain structure. This book for all those with an interest in the neural basis of emotion and memory.

Get 9% OFF

Click here for more information about The Amygdala: A Functional Analysis
Patricia J.
