(More customer reviews)I am pleased with the book in that it is thorough in it's discussion of trauma and the artistic interventions that can benefit those who suffer from it. I was hoping that the book would be more of an overview of creative ideas and how to apply them, rather than a discussion of why to use interventions involving creativity. However, it is still a valuable resource.

They were all so poorly written and talked about antiquated theories of counseling and therapy. Now, finally there is a wonderfully readable text and I am glad to have found it as I begin work with clients. This book is for anyone who is interested in using art in their work with adults, children, adolescents, and groups-- there are helpful chapters on trauma, medical issues, autism, ADHD, etc. There are also sections on art therapy assessments that are very well written and concise.
This is the state-of-the-art art therapy book for your counseling, psychology, or art therapy library. Also, if you are a beginner, see Malchiodi's Art Therapy Sourcebook, another readable volume.

Each expressive arts therapies are explained and there are examples of each modality through different therapist working with patients or clients of their own. Very well-written and organized. I have several expressive arts books and have to say that this book is very good to a beginner who needs understanding of expressive therapies and for advance therapist who may need a reminder or simply need a new idea. This book is informative...and even gives major evaluations and assessments! Everything is defined for clear and complete comprehension. Great for a class!

The author of that book must have never done any art based research. I cannot find any of his so-called research in any scholarly or peer reviewed journal anywhere. What's up with that?
This book finally explains what art-based research actually is and clearly. If you are looking for one book on this subject, skip McNiff and buy this one. You will not be disappointed.

(More customer reviews)I am an undergraduate majoring in Expressive Arts therapy, and found this book to be invaluable to my studies. Naumberg's case histories and evaluations lend an intimate, 'blow by blow' depiction of the way making art aids the communication and healing of her patients, most of whom were under 13 years old. Many other texts deal rather abstractly with the subject, as if one has already been practicing; Naumberg writes of concrete actions and results, with very little intervening (even though Freudian) interpretation. A must-have for anyone intending to embark in the profession of art therapist.

It provided the basics that I can build on to understand children's drawings and perhaps children in general. I,at least have a fundamental idea of what to look for and how to interpret what is presented to me by a child. This book will not make one an over night expert on children's drawing (that takes time) but it does provide simple and understandable direction.
