Fight Medicine: Diagnosis and Treatment of Combat Sports Injuries for Boxing, Wrestling, and Mixed Martial Arts Review

The author is insecure about his education and makes claims that are inaccurate. He operates from a dogmatic and narrow minded window. The picture of his Cervical Spine Stabilization is a reflection of his lack of knowledge. A fighter will be combative when they begin to come around and without stabilization of the shoulders with the head you have zero control of the Cervical Spine and are now further jeopardizing the athlete.

Fight Medicine is the first book that explains in detail what medical professionals, fighters, trainers and managers need to know about diagnosing and treating combat sports injuries.Injured boxers, wrestlers and mixed martial artists who ignore injuries or fail to seek optimal health care often pay for it with pain, frustration and lost training time. Many health care providers are unfamiliar with the unique issues of fight medicine, such as hand injury, ocular injury, concussion and chronic traumatic brain injury.Dr. Kelly has packed Fight Medicine with chapter after chapter of solid information on the diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of injuries and ailments suffered by fighters, including bone, joint and soft tissue injuries; neurological and cardiac conditions; pulmonary conditions; and infectious diseases.Whether you're a doctor who wants to learn more about fight medicine or a fighter or trainer, Fight Medicine will give you the information you need to make the right call.

The Arthritis Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to Alternative Therapies and Conventional Treatments for Arthritic Diseases Review

The Arthritis Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to Alternative Therapies and Conventional Treatments for Arthritic Diseases
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent, concise, highly usable book about ALL reasonable treatments that show merit and promise for treating arthritis, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Though the coverage of each treatment is remarkably brief and to-the-point, it avoids being just a "shopping list" of what to take; and manages to prioritize, in well-reasoned arguments, what makes the most sense to try and why.
Don't expect a flimsy health food store brochure filled with questionable claims, or some pamphlet telling you what you already know. This is a VERY well-written, SUPERBLY organized, thorough and comprehensive book--a model of how to cover conventional and alternative treatments of ANY disease. If you buy just one book on dealing with arthritis, this should be it. (And given how common arthritis is, it might make a thoughtful gift for someone else you know as well.)

The complete guide to available therapies for individuals suffering from osteoarthritis and other arthritic diseases.
' The most up-to-date information on this disease that strikes one in six people.

' Includes case histories, practitioners' perspectives, and a complete resource guide to the organizations, publications, and Internet sites devoted to arthritis.

For those suffering from arthritis and other arthritic diseases such as gout and fibromyalgia, The Arthritis Bible is the most up-to-date and complete resource to available treatments--both alternative and conventional. Forty-three million Americans--one in six of us--are afflicted with arthritis, yet the traditional medical community continues to offer only the limited number of treatments found within the narrowly proscribed boundaries of Western medicine. And while many alternative therapies do provide relief, too many have become victims of the "flavor-of-the-month" mentality, their true merits being lost amidst hype and unwarranted claims before adequate research has been done.

The Arthritis Bible supplies the latest wisdom on conventional drugs, exercise, physical therapy, diet, vitamins and minerals, traditional herbs, nutraceuticals, homeopathy, and folk remedies. It also advises how to choose the right medical approach and practitioner, and includes a complete resource guide to the organizations, publications and internet sites devoted to arthritis. For anyone seeking relief from the painful and often debilitating consequences of arthritic diseases, The Arthritis Bible is a must for the shelf.

The Art Of Living Long Review

The Art Of Living Long
Average Reviews:

This is the earliest written book on the benefits of calorie restiction I have found. The author's observations and benefits of his personal lifestyle correlate with recent scientific fidnings which include enhanced resistance to disease, increased stress resistance, increased lifespan, and increased function into old age. However, the reader should be advised by a physician and I recommend reading a study in Spain by Valejo (PubMed) as well as literature by Masaro (serarch Amazon or PubMed) and DK Ingram (PubMed) on the effects of dietary/calorie restriction. - Bruce Jones, Scientific Researcher and Medical Student (2005)

Biomedical Ethics (Fundamentals of Philosophy Series) Review

Biomedical Ethics (Fundamentals of Philosophy Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had my own rather nasty tangle with the margins of biomedical ethics last year. As a result, a lot of my online reading has been spent diving deeper in some of the ethical issues around medical research, pregnancy, premature babies, and intervention guidelines. I decided to pick this book up to try to give myself some background to the debate, so that I feel like I can be a more educated participant. That makes me a rather odd reader of this book, I suspect. It seems obvious that it was intended as a classroom text-- probably a class in Ethics 101 or something similar. I am unable to evaluate this as an ethics textbook.
The book is divided into a series of sections, each with its own focus on a particular ethical issue. I got most of the things that I needed out of the first chapter-- a short introduction to the histories and theories of biomedical ethics. Glannon does a concise and clear job of explaining the relevant frameworks and terminology. The book was worth the money to me for that alone.
The other chapters go on to place ethical issues into the framework that Glannon develops. Subjects include: patient-doctor relationships, human medical research, reproductive rights, genetics, end of life decisions, and medical rationing. I found the treatment of these subjects largely superficial, and were primarily useful to me as they contained pointers to further reading in the area.
I found the text as well written as this kind of thing can get without actually having any real flair behind it. As I said before, Glannon is clear and concise in the way he approaches the subjects. At times I had the feeling that he was presenting his opinion as established ethical principles, but am not really knowledgeable enough in the area to be sure that this is true.
I got out of it what I had hoped that I would get.

Today, advances in medicine and biotechnology occur at a rapid pace and have a profound impact on our lives. Mechanical devices can sustain an injured person's life indefinitely. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the body and brain can reveal disorders before symptoms appear. Genetic testing of embryos can predict whether people will have diseases earlier or later in life. It may even become possible to clone human beings. These and other developments raise difficult ethical questions. Biomedical Ethics is an engaging philosophical introduction to the most important ethical positions and arguments in six areas of biomedicine: the patient-doctor relationship, medical research on humans, reproductive rights and technologies, genetics, medical decisions at the end of life, and the allocation of scarce medical resources. Concisely capturing the historical, contemporary, and future-oriented aspects of the field, author Walter Glannon discusses both perennial issues in medicine, such as doctors' duties to patients, and recent and emerging issues in scientific innovation, including gene therapy and cloning. Ideal for undergraduate courses in contemporary moral problems, introduction to ethics, and introduction to bioethics, Biomedical Ethics is accessible to students who have little or no background in ethical theory, medicine, or biotechnology.

The Fighter's Body: An Owner's Manual: Your Guide to Diet, Nutrition, Exercise and Excellence in the Martial Arts Review

The Fighter's Body: An Owner's Manual: Your Guide to Diet, Nutrition, Exercise and Excellence in the Martial Arts

I don't normally write reviews for the books that I buy, but I decided to write one for this book because I liked it so much. I really liked how the information was presented with the martial artist in mind. I train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and it was an nice change to read a book on diet and nutrition that didn't assume that I was trying to build 22 inch arms or that I was a desk job jockey that could live on 1000 calories. For the first time, I understand what my needs are as far as calories, Proteins, Carbohydrates and Fats. I liked the fact that the book looks at your fitness level and bodyfat % and takes those into account. This is a really good book and I am glad I bought it.

Bodymind (Body Mind) Energetics: Toward a Dynamic Model of Health Review

Bodymind (Body Mind) Energetics: Toward a Dynamic Model of Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Mark Seem is a well known and respected Acupuncturist and founder of Tri-State Institute of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture in Stamford, Connecticut. The book presents theoretical foundations of the Acupuncture technique as practiced and taught by the author.
I read Bodymind Energetics about a year ago as part of my medical acupuncture study. It is a good introductory text for someone interested in Acupuncture and Energetic Medicine.
The book is accessible and well written; yes, as mentioned by the previous reviewer, it is repetitious at times, but I don't hold it against the author because the ideas advanced in the book are new for the majority of readers, and these concepts do require multiple different angles of presentations to make them clear.
One of the reviewers complained about the angry tone of the book. There is some truth in this observation. One thing we need to remember, though, is that the author of the book has Ph.D. in French Philosophy. I am not making a disparaging remark. Au contraire. What I am saying is that the author is a very intelligent and sensitive person (otherwise he wouldn't achieve what he has achieved and wouldn't be doing what he is doing!), but, judging by his (very elegant otherwise) writing style, the author's intellectual roots are undoubtedly Gallic with all the applicable stereotypes (see Monty Python and the Holy Grail or read Mark Twain's ramblings on the subject).
Just remember that there is plenty to learn from this book, and you will do much better paying attention to the content of the book, rather than tone with which it is written.
The one weakness of the book, in my opinion, is its cover: the picture of black human figure surrounded by energy field lines is somewhat misleading. I suspect that this picture scared off a lot of intended readers. Don't pay any attention to the cover: the book has nothing to do with Blavatskaya/Astral Body/Distance Healing/etc.
