Fight Medicine: Diagnosis and Treatment of Combat Sports Injuries for Boxing, Wrestling, and Mixed Martial Arts Review

The author is insecure about his education and makes claims that are inaccurate. He operates from a dogmatic and narrow minded window. The picture of his Cervical Spine Stabilization is a reflection of his lack of knowledge. A fighter will be combative when they begin to come around and without stabilization of the shoulders with the head you have zero control of the Cervical Spine and are now further jeopardizing the athlete.

Fight Medicine is the first book that explains in detail what medical professionals, fighters, trainers and managers need to know about diagnosing and treating combat sports injuries.Injured boxers, wrestlers and mixed martial artists who ignore injuries or fail to seek optimal health care often pay for it with pain, frustration and lost training time. Fighters require specialized medical care from appropriately trained medical professionals. Although there are many well-qualified physicians who take care of athletes, some may not have the specialized training needed to recognize a serious fight injury that can impact a fighter's career. Many health care providers are unfamiliar with the unique issues of fight medicine, such as hand injury, ocular injury, concussion and chronic traumatic brain injury.Dr. Kelly has packed Fight Medicine with chapter after chapter of solid information on the diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of injuries and ailments suffered by fighters, including bone, joint and soft tissue injuries; neurological and cardiac conditions; pulmonary conditions; and infectious diseases.Whether you're a doctor who wants to learn more about fight medicine or a fighter or trainer, Fight Medicine will give you the information you need to make the right call.

Zen and the Way of the Sword: Arming the Samurai Psyche Review

Zen and the Way of the Sword: Arming the Samurai Psyche
Average Reviews:

Though at times this book can be tough to read, it never stops being quite fascinating. The idea of getting into the mind of the Samurai was quite interesting. The book does a nice job explaining the ideas of Zen Buddhism and their influence on Japan. I really liked the chapters linking the Samurai mentality to WWII and the Japanese military. It can be a tough read, but worth it. Also, the illustrations are great.

The Ancient Art Of Life And Death: The Book of Dim-Mak Review

The Ancient Art Of Life And Death: The Book of Dim-Mak
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, let me preface this review and recuse myself to a degree. I am the co-author of this particular book. After much consideration, I decided to post something to Amazon.com, to help give the reader a general idea of the scope and content of this book, since none is currently included with this listing. The Ancient Art of Life and Death: The Book of Dim-Mak, took a considerable amount of time to write. Conservatively, Mr. Walker and I spent almost four years writing the text; roughly equating to 15,000 man-hours of highly specialized research, review, and work. As part of the review process, we submitted large portions of the text to a number of Doctors in the medical community. The intent of this project was to provide the advanced martial arts reader with a host of important facts and information, concerning the effects of martial applications to the acupoint centers of the human body. The major chapter areas of the book include:
1. Historical Overview of Traditional Chinese Medicine
2. The development of Dim-Mak, Dim Hsueh and Dim Ching
3. The Mechanism of Acupoint Strikes
4. The Medical Risks Associated with Acupoint Strikes
5. The Three Ways of Dim-Mak
6. Introduction to the 36-Chamber Training Sequence
7. Overview of the Classical Acupoint System
8. An Introduction to Herbalism
9. Herbal Formula Preparation and Pharmacology
The section covering the classical acupoint system covers all the points on the 12 major meridians, including both medical and martial information, and health and restoration information. This information is derived from Mr. Walker's extensive martial arts training and professional background, under the direct study of Matsuetsu Kushubi. The coverage of the points will hopefully serve to augment / complement the high quality information previously published on this subject: most notably, the extensive catalog of material of Mr. Erle Montaigue, as well as Dr. Michael Kelly. The book also includes general anatomical drawings and TCM charts of the main meridian acupoints.
As a notation: the two midline collaterals are NOT covered in this book. There are some specific reasons for this. Most importantly, the physiological processes of striking the midline channels (the Governing Vessel and the Conception Vessel) are different than the triggering mechanisms of the main meridian points. The centerline points will be covered in the follow-up book, which Mr. Walker and I are currently in the process of writing.

Contrary to popular myth, the original purpose of dim mak was not the training of assassins. It was an intensive study of the medical arts that incorporated the martial arts, and its ultimate goal was to heal, not to destroy. True to the intent of the ancient Chinese masters, here is an undiluted, holistic study of dim mak as both a martial and a healing art. Included are a historical overview of dim mak and Traditional Chinese Medicine, discussions of the physiological mechanism and medical risks of acupoint strikes, an indepth introduction to the classical 36 Chamber training program traditionally used to teach dim mak; detailed analyses of the medical and martial applications of each of the acupoints on the 12 main meridians, complete with detailed diagrams outlining each meridian system and its acupoint locations; and an introduction to herbal pharmacology, which was an integral part of traditional dim mak training. Appendices serve as quick reference guides to the activation method and results of selected point strikes. For academic study only.

Gouzao Gongji: Seven Neurological Attacks Inflicting Serious Damage Review

Gouzao Gongji: Seven Neurological Attacks Inflicting Serious Damage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The main value of this book is in the first two chapters. The first chapter identifies the seven main neurological targets, and describes the effects of attacking these targets. The illustrations and detailed descriptions are very informative. The second chapter gives general guidelines for attacking each of the targets. The following chapters, which make up the bulk of the book, show specific techniques directed against the targets. I found these techniques to be inefficient and impractical (for instance, a front kick to the chin).
I do believe this book has value for the experienced martial artist. Speaking for myself, the first two chapters provided me with enough information to see how I use these targets in the context of my own martial art.

Qi Gong Therapy: The Chinese Art of Healing With Energy Review

Qi Gong Therapy: The Chinese Art of Healing With Energy
Average Reviews:

Master Tzu Kuo Shih has put together a very good book for anyone who is new to qi gong. The book does not demonstrate any physical techniques, rather it lays the foundation for why qi gong works the way it does. This book is a must for any one who is interested in the origins of qigong in regards to traditional chinese medicine. Book is more TCM based than martial art based.

The Science of Takedowns, Throws & Grappling for Self-defense Review

The Science of Takedowns, Throws and Grappling for Self-defense
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Martina Sprague is one of those rare martial arts writers who fill her books with tons of information. She did it in Fighting Science and she does it again in The Science of Takedowns, Throws and Grappling for Self-Defense. You won't find 40 pages of warm-ups and 50 pages of basic punches and kicks. Instead, she jumps right into the meat of the subject and doesn't let up until the last page.
Sprague is one of the top analytical martial arts writers publishing today. Just when you think you are familiar with a concept or technique she is discussing and demonstrating, she adds a new piece of information, sometimes big, sometimes small, but always in such a way that makes you go, "Oh, okay. I see why that technique works." Or, "I see now why mine doesn't work."
With such subheadings as "The inherent weakness of your stance;" "Positioning preparatory to the takedown;" "Combining linear and circular motion;" "Shoot and gap closure for lower leg takedown;" "Ground mobility exercise;" "Takedown using two points of balance;" "Stick grabbing exercise;" "Center of gravity and momentum in throws:" and dozens more, you not only get your money's worth many times over, but you gain knowledge about the many aspects of the grappling arts that will overlap to all new techniques you learn in the future.
This is a book you will reference in the years to come. Good stuff. Highly recommended.

The odds are, if you're attacked on the street you will have to defend yourself against a bigger, stronger assailant. When this happens, strength alone will not be enough to stop your attacker. The Science of Takedowns, Throws and Grappling for Self-defense addresses the concepts and, more importantly, the mindset required to survive an encounter with a larger attacker.Martina Sprague, author of the top selling book Fighting Science, does more than show you what type of throws, takedowns, locks and presses work on the street. Learn why some techniques are more likely to get you into to trouble than out of it, how to apply concepts like timing and positioning to make your techniques even more effective, how to defend against common attacks with a weapon and what you can do to use that weapon in your favor, which mistakes are the most common and how you can prevent them from weakening your defense, and much more. With over 300 photos, you won't find a more detailed, scientific look at takedowns, throws and grappling techniques specifically for self-defense.

Death Touch: The Science Behind The Legend Of Dim-Mak Review

Death Touch: The Science Behind The Legend Of Dim-Mak
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a martial artist and neuroscientist, I was looking forward to reading this book and learning what, if anything, is known about the science behind pressure points in general and dim mak in particular. While I admire the effort put forth by the author, and I look forward to a time when science has made substantial strides in understanding pressure points, we are just not there yet.
The author presents unrestrained speculation and passes it off as solidly established scientific fact. For example, he suggests that because the nerve fibers from certain pressure points enter the spinal column at the same segment as nerves that innervate the heart, then hitting those pressure points will obviously have an effect on the heart. But there is no evidence presented (or in existance presumably) that these nerves actually make contact with one another! Simply because they are in the same room does not mean they shake hands.
That example is indicative of the general style of the book. In the instances where the author actually does make reference to some published study, the evidence cited typically relates to basic physiology and medicine and has no direct connection to pressure points per se.
The subject matter of this book is quite interesting -- that's why I bought it after all -- but to say that the author presents what is *known* about the physiology of dim mak is misleading and incorrect. At best the author has presented a theoretical framework for future scientific investigation. At worst, he has presented a completely incredible, wildly speculative, totally unproven view of the science behind dim mak.
Besides that, the diagrams included in the book are under-labeled, unattractive, and marginally useful (simply including a labeled point chart for each meridian or vessel would be a vast improvement). The reader shouldn't be forced to refer to another text with better figures just to have an idea where on the body a certain point is.

The martial arts world is rife with tales of ancient masters who could cause instant or delayed death or illness by attacking secret points on the human body. But to the Western mind, the concept of striking acupuncture points to disrupt the internal energy, or chi, seems like hocus-pocus. Thus, many serious martial artists dismiss the ancient art of dim-mak (also known as kyusho jitsu), which is literally translated as "death touch," as nothing more than fiction. However, if one can accept the idea that a dim-mak point is an avenue for attacking the nervous system, then it becomes easier to understand how striking specific points or groups of points can devastate the organs and the cardiovascular system. In this book, Dr. Michael Kelly, an osteopathic physician and experienced dim-mak practitioner, explains dim-mak's effects based on medical science. In layman's terms, Dr. Kelly reveals the physiological basis for what is clearly a very real and dangerous method of fighting. In the process of unraveling the mystery of this legendary art, Dr. Kelly makes the true genius of its founders brutally, and painfully, apparent.

Average Reviews:

I don't normally write reviews for the books that I buy, but I decided to write one for this book because I liked it so much. I really liked how the information was presented with the martial artist in mind. I train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and it was an nice change to read a book on diet and nutrition that didn't assume that I was trying to build 22 inch arms or that I was a desk job jockey that could live on 1000 calories. For the first time, I understand what my needs are as far as calories, Proteins, Carbohydrates and Fats. I liked the fact that the book looks at your fitness level and bodyfat % and takes those into account. This is a really good book and I am glad I bought it.
