Microbiological Analysis of Red Meat, Poultry and Eggs Review

"Cheese Problems Solved" is not the sequel to "Who Moved My Cheese" as the previous and only other reviewer of this gem of a book mentioned. That must have been their idea of some kind of joke. In fact this is the sequel to "Bread Problems Solved" and the second book in a trilogy that will be completed in 2009 with "Pickle Problems Pondered".

Red meat, poultry and eggs are, or have been, major global causes of foodborne disease in humans and are also prone to microbiological growth and spoilage. Consequently, monitoring the safety and quality of these products remains a primary concern. Microbiological analysis is an established tool in controlling the safety and quality of foods. Recent advances in preventative and risk-based approached to food safety control have reinforced the role of microbiological testing of foods in food safety management.
In a series of chapters written by international experts, the key aspects of microbiological analysis, such as sampling methods, use of fecal indicators, current approached to testing of foods, detection and enumeration of pathogens, and microbial identification techniques, are described and discussed. Attention is also given to the validation of analytical methods and Quality Assurance in the laboratory. Because of their present importance to the food industry, additional chapters on current and developing legislation in the European Union and the significance of Escherichia coli 0157 and other VTEC are included.
Written be a team of international experts, Microbiological Analysis of Red Meat, Poultry and Eggs is certain to become a standard reference in the important area of food microbiology.
Professor Geoff Mead is internationally renowned for his research on microbiological aspects of poultry production and processing.

The Poison Paradox: Chemicals As Friends and Foes Review

The Poison Paradox: Chemicals As Friends and Foes

I bought this book because I am interested in science and especially in chemistry. I wasn't disappointed because I found it real fascinating. I like the way its full of fascinating stories about poisoning but also theres lots of interesting information about chemicals. So its the kind of book you can just pick up and read a section of, sort of dip into. At the beginning theres a chapter on how chemicals get inside us and what happens to them. Then there are chapters on drugs, pesticides, chemicals in factories, at home, chemicals in food and so on. And at the end theres a chapter on assessment of risks from chemicals. It shows that chemicals are not all bad.I reckon everyone whose interested in chemicals should get this book.

Every day we are surrounded by chemicals that are potentially harmful. Some of these we take intentionally in the form of drugs; some we take unknowingly through the food we eat, and the environment around us. John Timbrell explores what makes particular chemicals harmful, what their effects are, and how we can test for them. He examines drugs such as Paracetamol and what it does to the body; Ricin, the most toxic substance known to man; Paraquat, a widely available weedkiller; and how the puffer fish, eaten as a delicacy in Japan, can kill. Using case studies from all around the world, such as the Spanish Oil syndrome which made over 20,000 people ill in Madrid, Timbrell uncovers the facts behind chemical scares. He shows how, with a rational, scientific, and balanced approach, risks can be assessed and managed safely.

The book was in brand new shape, other than for the "used" sticker on it I can't even tell it's been used and I got it at a good price compared to the bookstores. Delivery time was good too, it came right when I thought it would and I didn't have to sit around and wait for it.

The Arthritis Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to Alternative Therapies and Conventional Treatments for Arthritic Diseases Review

The Arthritis Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to Alternative Therapies and Conventional Treatments for Arthritic Diseases
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent, concise, highly usable book about ALL reasonable treatments that show merit and promise for treating arthritis, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Though the coverage of each treatment is remarkably brief and to-the-point, it avoids being just a "shopping list" of what to take; and manages to prioritize, in well-reasoned arguments, what makes the most sense to try and why.
Don't expect a flimsy health food store brochure filled with questionable claims, or some pamphlet telling you what you already know. This is a VERY well-written, SUPERBLY organized, thorough and comprehensive book--a model of how to cover conventional and alternative treatments of ANY disease. If you buy just one book on dealing with arthritis, this should be it. (And given how common arthritis is, it might make a thoughtful gift for someone else you know as well.)

The complete guide to available therapies for individuals suffering from osteoarthritis and other arthritic diseases.
' The most up-to-date information on this disease that strikes one in six people.

' Includes case histories, practitioners' perspectives, and a complete resource guide to the organizations, publications, and Internet sites devoted to arthritis.

For those suffering from arthritis and other arthritic diseases such as gout and fibromyalgia, The Arthritis Bible is the most up-to-date and complete resource to available treatments--both alternative and conventional. Forty-three million Americans--one in six of us--are afflicted with arthritis, yet the traditional medical community continues to offer only the limited number of treatments found within the narrowly proscribed boundaries of Western medicine. And while many alternative therapies do provide relief, too many have become victims of the "flavor-of-the-month" mentality, their true merits being lost amidst hype and unwarranted claims before adequate research has been done.

The Arthritis Bible supplies the latest wisdom on conventional drugs, exercise, physical therapy, diet, vitamins and minerals, traditional herbs, nutraceuticals, homeopathy, and folk remedies. It also advises how to choose the right medical approach and practitioner, and includes a complete resource guide to the organizations, publications and internet sites devoted to arthritis. For anyone seeking relief from the painful and often debilitating consequences of arthritic diseases, The Arthritis Bible is a must for the shelf.

This is an awesome book! As a educated African American female, suffering from obesity (sounds like a oxy-moron. This book spoke to me and helped me make a decision if I really wanted to do this or not. I am now waiting insurance approval for my gastric bypass surgery, and would recommend reading Darlene's journey. It was a quick read, which makes it great for those of us who are really busy.

Bodymind (Body Mind) Energetics: Toward a Dynamic Model of Health Review

Bodymind (Body Mind) Energetics: Toward a Dynamic Model of Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Mark Seem is a well known and respected Acupuncturist and founder of Tri-State Institute of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture in Stamford, Connecticut. The book presents theoretical foundations of the Acupuncture technique as practiced and taught by the author.
I read Bodymind Energetics about a year ago as part of my medical acupuncture study. It is a good introductory text for someone interested in Acupuncture and Energetic Medicine.
The book is accessible and well written; yes, as mentioned by the previous reviewer, it is repetitious at times, but I don't hold it against the author because the ideas advanced in the book are new for the majority of readers, and these concepts do require multiple different angles of presentations to make them clear.
One of the reviewers complained about the angry tone of the book. There is some truth in this observation. One thing we need to remember, though, is that the author of the book has Ph.D. in French Philosophy. I am not making a disparaging remark. Au contraire. What I am saying is that the author is a very intelligent and sensitive person (otherwise he wouldn't achieve what he has achieved and wouldn't be doing what he is doing!), but, judging by his (very elegant otherwise) writing style, the author's intellectual roots are undoubtedly Gallic with all the applicable stereotypes (see Monty Python and the Holy Grail or read Mark Twain's ramblings on the subject).
Just remember that there is plenty to learn from this book, and you will do much better paying attention to the content of the book, rather than tone with which it is written.
The one weakness of the book, in my opinion, is its cover: the picture of black human figure surrounded by energy field lines is somewhat misleading. I suspect that this picture scared off a lot of intended readers. Don't pay any attention to the cover: the book has nothing to do with Blavatskaya/Astral Body/Distance Healing/etc.
