The Art of Man: Faces of Plastic Surgery Review

The Art of Man: Faces of Plastic Surgery

I certainly thought the artistic display of before and after photos and the inclusion of personal stories written by actual patients were a definite refreshing take on plastic surgery as compared to the sterile textbook-style publications on the market today. This book was written in a real language without all the fancy jargon - I never felt as though I needed a medical degree to finish a paragraph.
I liked the "atmosphere" of this book as it was not just another book by a money-hungry socialite looking for fame. The experience behind this book made me trust that the information was real and not highly opinionated by a non-medical person. Who knows better than someone who peers into the human body on a day to day basis?
I loved the art and the personality of the book as well. Although if I could change one thing I would have either had the before photos with make up or the after photos without. I favor photos which are of the same substance and lighting for comparison, but still - kudos to Dr. Daniel Man!

Forensic Art and Illustration Review

Forensic Art and Illustration
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an officer with the Texas Department of Public Safety's Special Crimes Service, I have seen firsthand how a competent, professional, forensic artist can make the difference between success or failure in an investigation. Karen Taylor, in particular, has been instrumental in putting countless violent criminals behind bars. Numerous police agenices, communities, investigators and crime victims owe Karen Taylor a tremendous debt of gratitude for her contributions to law enforcement; many other individuals as well, because swift apprehension of predators meant they never had to experience the pain of becoming a crime victim. Unfortunately, I have also seen the wasted time and effort and the counterproductive confusion that accompanies substandard or marginal forensic art attempts. Forensic Art & Illustration should be "the reference" that sets the standard for forensic artists. It is also imperative that investigators, police administrators and prosecutors read and digest every word of this book. These professionals need to be able to evaluate the credibility of individual police artists and the techniques they employ to ensure that serious criminal investigations are not compromised. Thank you Karen for giving them the means to understanding. The intense labor and meticulous research that went into writing this book is apparent from start to finish. Karen Taylor has handed down to us a career's worth of precious and priceless knowledge. Her next project should be an anthology of case studies!!

Forensic Facial Reconstruction Review

Forensic Facial Reconstruction

During my vacation I had time to read this book, and I was fascinated with the field of facial reconstruction. The first chapters give a good overview of the human face with some background of facial recognition and the history of facial reconstruction.
Then the relation between the hard and soft tissues of the face are discussed,, with the general face shape, nose, eyes, mouth, chin and ears and some measures of variation are given. This book also handles the accuracy of facial reconstruction with some nice examples from real cases. The book ends with juvenile facial reconstruction which is difficult (however one case in the Netherlands was solved with this method). Some people say that the facial reconstructions do not really have to reflect all of the face, and that people might become aware by showing a face that they are missing someone they know very well.

This book's major contributions include a detailed description of the Manchester method of facial reconstruction, using all the available published data on tissue depths and variation with age, sex, stature and ethnic origin.Caroline Wilkinson also includes an evaluation of the methods and problems associated with reconstructing the faces of children.Forensic facial reconstruction reproduces an individual's face from skeletal remains. Used when identification is otherwise impossible, it can give a name to the dead in forensic cases, or in archaeological contexts, provide a tangible impression of real individuals from our past.

The Police Composite Sketch Review

The Police Composite Sketch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would certainly recommend Stephen Mancusi's text, The Police Composite Sketch, to anyone interested in the process of artistically retrieving a face from memory for investigative purposes. Though not the first book solely devoted to composite sketching, it is the best one. As the title indicates, this is a work expressly about drawings from eyewitness descriptions, told from a position of "street smart" savvy by a veteran police officer. Other aspects of forensic art are mentioned only briefly.
This volume serves as a tangible representation of a highly successful career's worth of crime-fighting police composite art. Stephen's solid personal experience and proven results are visually demonstrated with extensive skillful facial drawing examples. The information shared, particularly drawing tips, should be useful to both novice and seasoned police artists. Much of the material is presented anecdotally through the re-telling of case studies, which are peppered with a wealth of insightful tips and suggestions.
In a time when research in cognitive psychology provides more and more valuable insight into eyewitness memory retrieval and face recognition issues, the personal accounts related here also underscore a fundamental truth. The basic tenets of art skill, anatomical knowledge and intuitive, sensitive interviewing techniques should not be underestimated in this complex process. Stephen's work clearly establishes that these remain root components of the facial composite-generating function that no software can ever fully replicate or replace. Users of composite software systems would be well-advised to learn the foundations put forth in this book.
Mancusi is to be commended for the compilation and painstaking documentation of this worthwhile body of work and particularly for sharing his understanding and acumen with future practitioners.'

The police composite sketch, one of the most crucial investigative tools in law enforcement, is developed during a composite session-an intense display of communication and art in which the words of a witness are transformed into the features of a suspect. Despite the incredible technological leaps made in investigative work, the forensic science of composite sketching still relies on the basic elements of drawing skill, interpretive ability and the spoken word. The Police Composite Sketch is a comprehensive manual on how to conduct a complete composite session. Through an array of case studies, it details several disciplines that comprise this specialized forensic art, including composite sketching, image modification, age progression, facial comparison analysis, demonstrative evidence and postmortem/skull reconstruction. It also explores how to intuit insights that are often inadvertently revealed by witnesses, victims and perpetrators during the composite session. In addition, this book discusses other relevant topics, such as the three-stage drawing technique, witness and victim types, descriptive terminologies, managing composite sessions. Complete with numerous illustrations and drawing tips, this seminal work offers a general composite session philosophy and specific session strategies to both experienced and aspiring forensic artists as well as any lay reader intrigued by this fascinating skill.
