Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist (Galaxy Books) Review

Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist (Galaxy Books)

Copyright 1951? Wow, what a stimulating discovery, and what fun! Besides the skeletal and musculature illustrations, "Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist" is full of Peck's own drawings of basic anatomical features. These are not just the "final" drawings, like the master prints in Hale, but the beginning "rough sketches". I find this delightful because every beginner needs some inspirational guidance in drawing's first steps. A simple rough sketch of a nose, with shading; or bones drawn as a simple hinge joint, an arm or leg.... Peck's general reduction of the human figure to basic shapes is of inestimable help. The reader may just find himself saying, "Hey, I can do THAT!!!" And that is the wonderful thing about PECK's book.
Peck has impeccable credentials and must be compared to Robert Beverly Hale. Peck's is not merely an alternate duplication of the same material Hale covers. There is a 'personal' touch in Peck; but the problem with any/all anatomy books, for beginners, is that they are simply intimidating, in their detail, their precision, their absolute realism. PECK overcomes this anatomical intimidation. I would venture that PECK ought to be included in at least the first several "drawing" books that one acquires. Sometimes it seems that several pages offer more practical instruction to a new student than entire chapters in the books coming out in recent years with gimmicky titles.
"Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist," in combination with any beginning book on figure drawing is a must. With Famous Artist's School, Willy Pogany, Walt Reed, Jack Hamm, Viktor Perard and similar instruction, any ...................
book-buyer / beginning artist will find themselves advancing steadily. I rate this in the top 4 of figure drawing books for the beginner.
The chapter on "Distinctions of Age, Sex, And Race" is highly useful. PECK may be in danger of getting shoved aside with time and the publication of new pablum texts containing nothing new or vital; but PECK has written a timeless text that commands respect. CARPE DIEM [Seize the day!] I rate this book a very deserved 5 stars*

Visualizing Muscles: A New Ecorché Approach to Surface Anatomy Review

Visualizing Muscles: A New Ecorché Approach to Surface Anatomy
Average Reviews:

A fair sized book, it's unique in the sense that the male model has the relevant muscles and tendons actually drawn on his body. Nice concept but I don't think it really helps. Because the muscles are tendons and the skin is, well, skin, it stretches as a mass and not as fibers. I think the poses are useful though, good lighting to show muscle definition and tone and decent-sized photographs too.

As the human body moves, muscles contract and relax, creating subtle changes in body contours and shifting patterns of light and shadow on the skin's surface. Visualizing exactly what happens beneath the skin to cause these changes on the surface is an essential skill for artists, physicians, physical therapists, and body builders-for anyone who needs to understand the body in motion. But how do you teach this skill? Why not paint a live model to look as though his skin had been stripped off and then photograph him in multiple poses? From that idea comes Visualizing Muscles, an innovative aid to drawing, sculpting, and learning surface anatomy.More than one hundred static and active poses are included in Visualizing Muscles. Paired photographs--one painted and labelled, one not--show how the simulated muscles produce the subtle lights and darks, hills and valleys, on the model's unpainted skin. Captions highlight the muscles called into play by a given pose.Dr. Cody, who experimented with techniques for two years, pioneers the use of a model on whose skin muscles, tendons, and fascial sheaths are painted with scientific accuracy. Because of the elasticity of the skin and paint, the painted musculature expands and contracts along with the underlying muscles. Thus Cody's technique enables students of anatomy to visualize the muscles beneath the skin and the changes brought about by movement. This 8-1/2" x 11" book contains 9 full-color and 221 black-and-white photographs.

The Bible as Literature: An Introduction Review

The Bible as Literature: An Introduction

It is difficult to separate the literary and religious aspects of the Bible, but the authors' focus is on the book "as literature" and in the space of 357 pages (in my copy of the 4th edition - 432 according to Amazon.com), they cover literary forms and strategies, historical and geographic settings, the major components of the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha and Pseudoepigrapha, and issues concerning the text and its translation. A valuable final chapter considers the religious use and interpretation of the Bible. Although the book is concise, it manages in its 18 chapters and 3 appendices to be comprehensive and is consistently readable. I find the sensible, scientific approach credible and while it frequently causes me to reflect on my religious beliefs, they are not seriously undermined by this liberal approach. I do not know of a better introduction to the Bible.

To say that the Bible is "literature" is to acknowledge that it was written by real human beings who lived in historical times and who had meanings they sought to convey to real readers. In this exciting new work, Gabel and Wheeler approach the Bible from a literary/historical perspective, offering insights into the literary forms and strategies of Biblical writing, its historical and physical settings, the process of canon formation, the sources of the Pentateuch, and the nature of biblical genres like propohecy, apocalypse, and gospel. The text also considers practical problems in the translation process, and compares a number of English versions. The rigorously neutral scholarship displayed in The Bible as Literature makes the literary art of the Bible accessible to people of all faiths.

Healing With Love: A Breakthrough Mind/Body Medical Program for Healing Yourself and Others (Art of Holoenergetic Healing) Review

I like this book very much. Dr. Laskow embraces an incredibly wide spectrum of healing methods the reader can practice at home. Here is a man who delivered 1000 babies before he was 35 years old, then decided to devote his remaining years to empower patients to heal themselves and to help others do the same.
L. Lawkow demonstrates his role as a teacher of consciousness-based healing. He presents new contemporary healing techniques, includes more than 20 excercises, and an appendix with the scientific basis for healing with subtle energies by Dr. Glen Rein,
As the author of Healing Yourself with Light, I found it joyful to see how interwoven our healing books are even though we had nor met while writing them. Healing with light and with love is surely the best possible combination for success!

A must have for all college and graduate students. Turabian answers all questions regarding proper citation, organization, and formatting. The only downside is that research has changed dramatically since this issue was published and the book is not too helpful in dealing with electronic/internet resources.

Meta-Analysis, Decision Analysis, and Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: Methods for Quantitative Synthesis in Medicine Review

Meta-Analysis, Decision Analysis, and Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: Methods for Quantitative Synthesis in Medicine
Average Reviews:

In a forest of mirky and arcane descriptions of a field that has come to dominate medical research and policy making, this book stands out for its clarity. Dr. Petitti speaks a language that normal people can understand. She avoids jargon and frequently uses quantitative examples that make it easy to plug in your own problems and directly apply her lessons to your tasks. This is easily the best book in print on this topic

Meta-analysis, decision analysis, and cost-effectiveness analysis are the cornerstones of evidence-based medicine. These related quantitative methods have become essential tools in the formulation of clinical and public policy based on the synthesis of evidence. All three methods are taught with increasing frequency in medical schools and schools of public health and in health policy courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. This book is a lucid introduction, and will serve the needs of students taking introductory courses that cover these topics. It will also be useful to clinicians and policymakers who need to understand the quantitative underpinnings of the methods in order to best apply the information that derives from them. The second edition of this popular book adds new material on cumulative meta-analysis as a method to explore heterogeneity. The coverage of cost-effectiveness analysis has been brought into close alignment with recommendations of the U.S. Public Health Panel on Cost-Effectiveness Analysis in Health and Medicine. Many of the examples have been replaced with more current examples, and all of the material has been updated to reflect recent advances in the methods and the emergence of consensus about some previously controversial issues. analysis. These three closely related methods have become even more important for synthesizing research since the first edition was published in 1994. And they have gained legitimacy as tools for guiding health policy.

Structuralism and Since: From Lévi-Strauss to Derrida (Opus Books) Review

Structuralism and Since: From Lévi-Strauss to Derrida (Opus Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Structuralism was a popular means of studying literature in the early and mid twentieth century, eclipsed larged by deconstruction. As a method, however, structuralism seems far more serious and articulate than its successor.
This is the best overview of structuralism ever. I initially found it in the library, and after reading it thoroughly, determined it was a book necessary for my own library. I found it compelling on a number of fronts, from figurative fiction to solipsistic fiction, and on most other fronts as well.
Sadly, most English departments have "moved on" to deconstruction, having abandoned structuralism to the dust heap of analysis. All the work of de Saussure, Barthes, and others have simply been deposed. Still, there's more merit in this one book than all the books written on deconstruction.
The reader is asked to examine texts in a peculiar way that serves both atemporality as well as temporality. The reader is shown ways to "structuralize" texts so that they may reveal yet further meaning. It's a valuable lesson, the life of which has sadly been dethroned of late.
