Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders Review

Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders

A great many books have been written about cognitive therapy, but few are as useful to the cognitive practitioner as this book by Robert Leahy and Stephen Holland. It is a book that is remarkable for its scholarship and distilled years of clinical acumen, and clinicians, graduate students, and psychiatrists in training will find it practical beyond measure. I am a great admirer of Leahy and Holland's previous work, and this new effort has exceeded my own heightened expectations for such a volume. The book is a compendium of information that is valuable beyond measure, and makes a profound claim on the attention of all serious cognitive therapists, and those who are in training to learn cognitive therapy. The book is also likely to attract a wide audience among teachers of cognitive therapy courses in graduate and medical schools, and internship and residency programs. Among the particular glories of this excellent book are that the reader gets easy and immediate access to "state of the art" treatments for depression and anxiety disorders, detailed treatment plans, a CD that allows printable forms for patients and therapist, a detailed list of cognitive therapy interventions, and medication charts. The book is a first rate summary of knowledge about disorders and their treatments, synthesized into usable form by two master cognitive therapists, and so it is likely to be of great value to clinicians, graduate students, and psychiatrists in training. Thus, the book by Leahy and Holland is key reference work that serious cognitive practitioners will want for their libraries, and that both experienced and novice therapists can find helpful.

Overcoming Depression: A Cognitive Therapy Approach Workbook (Treatments That Work) Review

Overcoming Depression: A Cognitive Therapy Approach Workbook (Treatments That Work)

This new and revised treatment manual sets a high mark for presenting
therapy in a clear and accessible manner. It contains the fundamentals
of treatment for the depressed individual in a readable and
user-friendly format. The concept of the depression BEAST (Body,
Emotion, Action, Situations, and Thoughts) allows for an easy
conceptualization of the components of mood, and at the same time is
whimsical and intriguing. It strikes just the right balance, and I
believe it is a refined contribution to the psychotherapist's toolkit
for providing empirically supported treatment that helps people improve
their mood and function better in their lives. (from Overcoming Depression Therapist Manual publication)----Aaron T. Beck, M.D., is the President of the non-profit Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research, and University Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. The recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees, Dr. Beck is the only psychiatrist to receive research awards from both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association. He is also a senior member of the Institute of Medicine and recipient of the Albert Lasker Clincial Medical Research Award, the Heinz Award for "The Human Condition", The Sarnat Award and Lienhard Award from The Institute of Medicine.

A Working Life For People With Severe Mental Illness Review

I work as a psychiatrist in an academic setting, and use this book frequently for teaching purposes and as a reference for residents and students. I used it extensively for Canadian psych boards preparation. It is especially valuable because it gives perspective to new research by giving the history of research papers that established for example the use of Lithium (on which little has been written since the 70s and 80s), it also describes very well psychosocial treatments for a wide variety of mental illnesses, much more clearly and exhaustively than in the Kaplan and Saddock, for instance. It also reads very well. Highly recommended

Traditional approaches to vocational rehabilitation, such as skills training classes, job clubs, and sheltered employment, have not been successful in helping people with severe mental illness gain competitive employment. Supported employment, in which clients are placed in jobs and then trained by on-site coaches, is a radically new conceptual approach to vocational rehabilitation designed for people with developmental disabilities. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) method utilizes the supported employment concept, but modifies it for use with the severely mentally ill. It is the only approach that has a strong empirical research base: rates of competitive employment are 40% or more in IPS programs, compared to 15% in traditional mental health programs. The third volume in the Innovations in Practice and Service Delivery with Vulnerable Populations series, this will be extremely useful to students in psychiatric rehabilitation programs and social work classes dealing with the severely mentally ill, as well as to practitioners in the field.

Oxford Textbook of Psychotherapy Review

The font size is a joke!? It's the smallest print letter I've ever seen! What's the point of editing an interesting and complete book, if the reader's gonna end up with a headache after 5 minutes of reading? If I had known, I'd definitely wouldn't have bought it.

With the publication of this book psychotherapy finally arrives at the mainstream of mental health practice. This volume is an essential companion for every practising psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, psychotherapy counsellor, mental health nurse, psychotherapist, and mental health practitioner. It is integrative in spirit, with chapters written by an international panel of experts who combine theory and research with practical treatment guidelines and illustrative case examples to produce an invaluable book. Part One gives a comprehensive account of all the major psychotherapeutic approaches. Parts Two and Three systematically describe psychotherapeutic approaches to the major psychiatric disorders and personality disorders. Many chapters are multi-authored and describe the psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural and other approaches for treating these illnesses. Part Four examines applications and modifications of psychotherapy across the lifecycle. Part Five describes psychotherapy with specific populations such as medical patients and those where gender is an issue, and finally Part Six tackles some of the special topics of concern to psychotherapists including ethics, legal issues, and psychotherapy and neuroscience. The first of its kind, this is a 'must have' volume for all trainee and practising psychological therapists, whatever their background - psychiatry, psychology, social work, or nursing.
