As a parent of a child on the autism spectrum who was very interested in music therapy, I did not find it so helpful or hopeful, for that matter. Dorita Berger's book, Music Therapy, Sensory Integration and the Autistic Child was very good.

(More customer reviews)This book examines the practical uses of music as a therapeutic intervention for older adults having health care needs and disabilities, and to promote wellness for the healthy older person. It is a very accessible guide for the professional clinician, caregiver and layman. The described music applications and approaches are easy to read and comprehend. These include using music for wellness, using music with people with dementia of the Alzheimer's type, Parkinson's disease, stroke and cardiac disease, using music to manage problem behaviors, using music for stress management, relaxation, pain control, physical exercise, physical rehabilitation and spirituality, and using music with caregivers. I personally use this book many times over. It is an excellent resource tool. When giving a workshop about the uses of music for persons with dementia, I refer to sections of the book to illustrate specific clinical examples. The book is also very useful to describe theoretical concepts as a way of teaching music therapy practicum and internship students about successful clinical treatment protocols. When I have the opportunity to teach a music therapy class about music therapy and gerontology, I refer to the book for lecture ideas. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about how music improves the quality of life of the older adult.

The New Music Therapist's Handbook Review

(More customer reviews)I am a registered music therapist. I found this to be a very understandable and easy to read book. It outlines everything a music therapist needs to know in a clinical setting. It would be a great book for an intro to music therapy class. It sets the tone for a solid music therapy program.
First, it defines music therapy with different populations, i.e., behavior disorders, developmental disabilities, psychiatric disorders, medical patients, etc. In short, all of the places where music therapists work.
Second, it outlines the steps: Identifying the therapeutic objectives, assessment, designing a therapeutic plan, determining strategies, implementing the plan, and evaluating the music therapy. Each step is a chapter in the book, and each chapter ends with a selection of other books for further reading.
In a nutshell, this is goal-oriented music therapy. If all university programs educated their students (and not all do) as concisely as this book, there would be a lot more good music therapists walking around.
