(More customer reviews)This is an excellent basic primer on the causes of heavy menstrual bleeding and advice for dealing with it. Heavy bleeding can result in anemia, a condition also covered quite adequately. This information is presented in a workbook style, where the reader is first given some education on the subject, then guided to recognize and evaluate her own symptoms using worksheets. What follows is a wealth of advice concerning nutrition, diet, exercise, alternative therapies, drug therapy, and surgical intervention. Since the book covers all heavy menstrual bleeding, no one cause is examined in depth - for specific causes such as fibroid tumors or endometriosis, other sources of information would probably be needed. This book's great strength is its advice on diet, including sample menus and recipes, and its 18 pages of suggested exercise - a simple stretching routine, including several yoga positions. If mild anemia due to excessive menstrual bleeding is your problem, this book is an excellent starting place to inform yourself about what's going on with your body and what you can do to help yourself.

Treasured family photos are included, for example there is, made in 1982, is a group picture of four generations, including Kim's mother, a former journalist, her grandmother, and her daughter at nine weeks old. There is even a photo of the mother's declining writing, as she wrote "I love you" in the fall of 1989. As the years passed and the disease progressed in her mother's life, Kim, a teacher, artist, and graduate student working on a degree in art, was influenced by the disease in her paintings. Kim's paintings changed as she explored her family's emotional struggle and visualized her mother's feelings in her work. Kim and her mother's journey was aided by their creativity in helping them cope, understand, and express the changes brought about by what her mother called "Al, Mrs. Zheimer's son".

(More customer reviews)This is a very inspiring book. An excellent and complete overview of how genetic research is permeating popular culture, of how the gene has become a powerful and pervasive icon with a social meaning that goes beyond its biological properties.
This is an excellent volume for those who are interested in the regular shifts of boundaries between the domains of art and science. The authors explore the rise of an increasingly important new trend in contemporary art involving science by documenting the ideas and images that artists are using in association with the genetic view of life. They underline and provide insight into the social and cultural meaning of genetic research and of genetic essentialism through contemporary artists' interpretation of scientific process. In its well odered and relevantly different sections, Suzanne Anker and Dorothy Nelkin touch upon topics such as the sequencing of the genome and the reduction of humans to 'molecularl texts', the concept of identity, genetic engineering, the creation of transgenics and chimeras, assisted reproduction and cloning.
It is thorough work and well written, with the necessary historical references. A continuous, witty, appropriate and precise account of the questions, concepts, ideas and images fluctuating between the realm of science and that of art. I highly recommend it. A very good buy.

The 2003 edition by Temenos press opens with a new and riveting foreword by Dr. Martin Kalff about the life of his mother, Dora M. Kalff. His "experience near" delivery of thought and feeling brings to the reader a special intimacy with Dora Kalff's personal and professional life experiences.
Temenos is scrupulous in retaining Dora Kalff's original words, but has added useful material which makes it possible to use Sandplay: A Psychotherapeutic Approach to the Psyche as a reference book: a detailed new table of illustrations where chapters, pages and captions are clearly cross referenced, a table of works cited which is also "user friendly," and finally an excellent index.
In chapter 1, Sandplay: A Pathway to the Psyche, Dora Kalff lays out the phases fo psychic development. The reader is immediately struck by her teaching style, an by the generous number of illustrations. Chapters 2 through 10 are case histories. To me these chapters read not only like clinical case histories but also like biographical vignettes that happen to be "clinical." One not only understands but gets the "feel" of how Kalff worked. Some of the chapters are : Kim, a 12-year old- with learning problems; James, a 16-year-old who experienced early trauma; Dede, a 5-year-old with a speech block; Ursula, a young woman suffering from depression; and Eric, a man with a blushing problem. Other chapters deal with issues of anxiety, enuresis, passivity, and isolation. The book's conclusion confirms Kalff's related wisdom.
