Workbook of Epidemiology Review

Workbook of Epidemiology
Average Reviews:

Audience: This book is suitable for discussion of epidemiological principles or critical evaluation for students and participants at any level of epidemiology expertise, whether beginning or advanced, as led by an experienced instructor. The result will be a development of epidemiological judgment and intuition, rather than of achieving skill in completing more technical problems. Features: The book has been produced in an attractive, easy-to-use format. The problems are based on published research, and the references are included with the answers, providing further opportunities for teaching. This is a very useful book, and I am looking forward to using it for teaching and discussion groups. The first chapter israther overambitious in attempting to present too detailed a description of epidemiological methodology in 40 pages. In places, a better use of the English idiom would have made this chapter easier to read. However, this does not detract from the main aim of this book, which is that of providing problems for discussion. I recommend the book highly for this purpose. The bulk of this book consists of seven chapters with epidemiological problems for discussion in a group setting. Six of these chapters start with a short introduction to epidemiological methodology followed by 30 short problems and 10 general questions. Another chapter contains longer problems also suitable for group discussion. The first chapter of the book provides a concise, quite detailed summary of epidemiological methods, and the last chapter has more than 100 pages of answers to all the problems listed earlier. The author found that there was a gap between epidemiological principles presented in textbooks and their application in the planning and critical evaluation of epidemiological studies. In this book, the author successfully provides the means to bridge this gap through class discussions.

Through a combination of descriptive text and exercises, this book presents an accessible framework for the planning and critical evaluation of epidemiologic studies. It describes the principal sources of error, their impact on the results, and the research strategies used to prevent errors. These strategies are the building blocks of epidemiologic study design which generally seek to obtain accurate results despite the employment of limited resources. The volume is illustrated with examples and exercises from studies published in international journals. It starts with an introduction of basic concepts, followed by a discussion of the basics of selecting the study population and follow-up period, asking the right questions, obtaining information on exposures, and analyzing disease occurrence. Separate treatment is given to strategies specific to case-control or experimental studies. Each step in the planning or critical evaluation of a study is illustrated by exercises covering a wide range of exposures--dietary factors, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, radiation and occupational hazards among others--and diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and psychiatric disorders. The book concludes with an overall review of the different aspects of study design and a set of answers to the exercises. The text will equip students with a clear and thorough understanding of the design and accuracy of epidemiologic studies.

This 2nd edition book is 186 pages. All pages are packed full of pictures of human brains from every view and cross section you could ever want to see, showing each photo with and without labels so that you can learn the structures. This book is absolutely great for medical students, physicians, brain researchers, and anyone at all who has an interest in what structures make up the human brain.

Foundations of Epidemiology has been widely used as an introductory text in a broad range of epidemiology courses. Minimal familiarity with statistics is assumed in the book. The text gives lucid, well-organized explanations of basic epidemiologic concepts such as rates and ratios, age-adjustment, incubation periods, investigation of an outbreak, time-place-and person, agent-host-environment, surveillance, screening, sensitivity, specificity, predictive value, odds ratios, and case-control study design. Statistics In the Pharmaceutical Industry, 3rd Edition (Chapman & Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series) Review

Statistics In the Pharmaceutical Industry, 3rd Edition (Chapman and Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series)

This is a very nice collection of real world examples from the pharmaceutical industry. There are many articles here that any biostatistician in the pharmaceutical industry would find fascinating. In fact one of my former bosses, Ted Smith from Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc, wrote an article about testosterone supplements. Auxilium markets Testim a testosterone gel that is used as a supplement for older men with low levels of testosterone in their system.

The growth of the pharmaceutical industry over the past decade is astounding, but the impact of this growth on statistics is somewhat confusing. While software has made analysis easier and more efficient, regulatory bodies now demand deeper and more complex analyses, and pharmacogenetic/genomic studies serve up an entirely new set of challenges. For more than two decades, Statistics in the Pharmaceutical Industry has been the definitive guide to sorting through the challenges in the industry, and this Third Edition continues that tradition.
Updated and expanded to reflect the most recent trends and developments in the field, Statistics in the Pharmaceutical Industry, Third Edition presents chapters written by experts from both regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical companies who discuss everything from experimental design to post-marketing studies. This approach sheds light on what regulators consider acceptable methodologies and what methods have proven successful for industrial statisticians. Both new and revised chapters reflect the increasingly global nature of the industry as represented by authors from Japan and Europe, the increasing trend toward non-inferiority/equivalence testing, adaptive design in clinical trials, global harmonization of regulatory standards, and multiple comparison studies. The book also examines the latest considerations in anti-cancer studies.
Statistics in the Pharmaceutical Industry, Third Edition demystifies the approval process by combining regulatory and industrial points of view, making it a must-read for anyone performing statistical analysis at any point in the drug approval process.

Methods in Observational Epidemiology Review

Methods in Observational Epidemiology

I drudged my way through the early chapters of this book. Most all-star topics in epidemiology are reliably laid out there. Unfortunately, the book is boring as hell. The one time I tried to use one of examples given in the book to calculate something (power or sample size?) I got hopelessly lost - the layout does not allow formulas to stand out. I found class notes and handouts much more useful than this book.

Providing a comprehensive picture of the design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of non-experimental studies of both infectious and non-infectious diseases, the Second Edition of this widely used text has been thoroughly updated to take into account the numerous developments in epidemiology over the past decade. Since the first edition was published in 1986, additional sources of data have become available through the increasing use of computerized records for health-related purposes. Also, a better understanding of the uses and limitations of certain epidemiologic concepts has been gained. Modifications of traditional study designs, including nested case-control studies and case-cohort studies, are now more frequently employed. Biological markers of exposure, disease susceptibility, and disease itself are used in many studies and methods of statistical analysis have been further developed. All of these developments have been considered in writing the Second Edition. The authors cover the full scope of observational studies, describing in detail cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, and epidemic investigation. The use of statistical procedures is described in easy-to-understand terms. Sample size estimation, sampling, measurement, and measurement error are fully discussed. Each chapter in the second edition has been updated and several chapters have been expanded. Chapter 3, which summarizes sources of data on disease occurrence, includes several additional sources of data. Chapter 5, which describes modifications of traditional study designs, now contains nested case-control and case-cohort studies. Chapter 15, on other types of measurement, has been expanded to include sections on measurement in epidemiologic studies of the elderly and on biological markers since these have become major areas of epidemiologic research in recent years. Much of the material in Chapters 6, 7, and 9 on the analysis of data from epidemiologic studies is also new to this edition.Perhaps the greatest challenge for the authors in writing this Second Edition was to make some of the modern, frequently used methods of statistical analysis understandable to readers with a limited mathematical or statistical background. Although this book is intended for readers who have had introductory courses in epidemiology and biostatistics, even readers who do not fully comprehend the theory behind some of the techniques should understand the rationale for their use and be able to interpret results when they appear on a computer printout or in the literature. The Second Edition of this widely used text will serve as a practical resource for students and practitioners of epidemiology, public health and biostatistics.
