(More customer reviews)Dr. Slack has written what I believe is the first book-length biography of G. Evelyn Hutchinson, a visionary scientist and polymath who played a central role in the development of modern ecology. This is a fabulous book that describes Hutchinson's myriad accomplishments in the context of his early life in England and then his long and productive career at Yale. This book is a must-read for college students currently working in any aspect of ecology, the life sciences, natural resource management, or anyone interested in the history of science.

Stephen J. Gould declared G. Evelyn Hutchinson the most important ecologist of the twentieth century. E. O. Wilson pronounced him "one of the few scientists who could unabashedly be called a genius." In this fascinating book, Nancy G. Slack presents for the first time the full life story of this brilliant scientist who was also a master teacher, a polymath, and a delightful friend and correspondent.
